I spent half an hour comparing craft/pagan/pre-Christian festivals from my home country with my Mandarin teacher, who's from a rural area in Northeast China. There's an almost exactly equivalent festival in every case, although the ceremonies/modern fun-filled add-ons are different. There are even equivalents to wassailing and mulled wine (clearly I know more about the add-ons than the craft stuff...)
