Happy Saint Georges day.

And Happy St George's Day for you too (from someone born in Wales!).

Raise a few glasses.

Don't forget the Welsh and Irish. Any excuse does for a drink... Even if it is England's day.

I could never quite figure out good Saint George. He's a complex mess. Warrior-saint (what the hell is that anyway?), prophet, dragon-slayer and revered by both Christians and Muslims. Just about everything known about him is legend. We have no history, no documentation and the earliest texts about him were written at least a century after he died. And the dragon thing was very cool but certainly made up.

I just read that he was canonized as one 'whose names are justly revered among men but whose acts are known only to God'. In other words, even the church has no idea who he is. As they did many time before (and since) they simply absorbed an existing belief or ritual. It was much easier than trying to expunge it.

Not criticizing your choice of patron saint, and I'll raise a belated toast to you a bit later today (barely daylight here). Cheers. I love old stories.

Happy St. George’s day to my friends from England. (Two days late and a pound short)

Wasn't he Turkish or somewhere that part of the world?
