Pi Day: How 3.14 helps find other planets, and more

Happy Pi Day! A favorite holiday among geeks, March 14 commemorates one of the most fundamental and strange numbers in mathematics. It's also Albert Einstein's birthday.

More fun and interesting stuff at the link above... including the first 10,000 digits of pi, copied below from here.

Oh, hell! Even *I* am not interested enough to keep backspacing and deleting through all those lines of broken pieces of pi! That's several hundred of 'em, but nuh-uh, I'm not going there. I have to go to bed before midnight, or I'll turn into a pumpkin. If you want to see all 10K digits, go to the link I so thoughtfully provided above. :p

Crap. I meant to bake a pie to celebrate, but had such a long day I forgot. :(

And now it's the Ides of March.

A coincidence? I think not, my friends. Forthwith:

Pi is a mathematical symbol for a mathematical relationship.
Modern math, as we know it, was largely codified by the Greeks.
Rome conquered the Greeks in war.
Julius Caesar is best known for his success in the Gallic Wars.
March is named for Mars, the Roman god of War.
Caesar, even though he was warned ahead of time, was stabbed in the forum (and the duodenum, among other places) on March 15, the Ides of March.
My π was a well-known pizza restaurant in Chicago.*

That the Ides of March follows Pi Day so closely is not a coincidence.

*This red herring (though I'm sure they never served herring pizza) is included so that my brilliant logical explanation of this occurrence might be picked up by the conspiracy theorists at World PizzaNews Daily. I might even get lucky and be named Pepperoni Philosopher of the Month.
