Happy Cinco de Mayo.
In Los Angeles, Cinco de Mayo is a great day of cultural celebration, where members of the local Chicano movement, often mistaking themselves for Mexicans, gather in mid-day harmony for family oriented fun -- eating, drinking, dancing, listening to music, etc. If asked, they would tell you that they are celebrating Cinco de Mayo, also known as Mexican Independence Day, by honoring the memory of, Cesar Estrada Chavez, the martyr who died championing the cause of undocumented workers trying to eek out a living doing jobs the oppressive Anglos are afraid to do.
Eventually, the drinking part overtakes the eating and dancing part. Soon the equivalent of ¿Qué le watcha a mis trapos, ese? takes over and the riot police are called.
The fact that they have no idea what the day allegedly commemorates is irrelevant. Good fun is had by all. It's a good thing.
