(If it really is your birthday and not an April Fool's joke.
)
Happy Birthday, Stella! I'm glad you were born.

(In the past, people have told me that saying "I'm glad you were born" to somebody on their birthday was weird and bizarre, and while I don't really have any objection to being weird and bizarre
, allow me to explain. When I was in grad school the first time, I shared a house with five other women. One of those women, J, was the child of two mathematicians. I dunno, it seems like two of the same thing shouldn't marry -- I've seen some weird kids result from two psychologists or two mathematicians or two of anything else. J was an especially unusual woman, because her parents didn't "do" feelings, so she didn't actually have a relationship with them. They fed her and kept her clean, but it evidently never occurred to them to love her. One wonders how they came to marry.
Until she moved in with us, her only emotional relationship was with her horse.
Anyway, when we all started living together, I went around with a sheet of paper and got people to list their birthdays, then posted it. When Joyce's birthday rolled around, we asked what kind of cake she wanted for her birthday party (just a house party, not a big party), and she said that she'd never had a birthday party before, so she didn't really understand what the point of one was. The other housemates kinda looked down and shuffled their feet, since they weren't sure what to say, but I thought that "What is the purpose of birthday celebrations" was an interesting question, so I thought about it for a minute. Then I told her that a person's birthday was an occasion where the people who were glad that person was born showed up to tell them so. She pondered this for a moment, then announced that this was a nice custom, and she'd like to participate. We made a big sign out of poster board, saying "We're glad J was born!" and put it on the wall for her party, so that she wouldn't forget.
Since that time, it's been my custom to specifically state "I'm glad you were born!" when I celebrate somebody's birthday. No matter how well loved a person has been, they've usually never specifically been told "I'm glad you were born," and I think that's something that everybody should hear at least once in their lives. A few other people have even started picking it up from me. I happen to think that saying "I'm glad you were born" to people of whom that is true is a nice custom, for all that it's my very own.)
Anyway, please join me in wishing Stella a happy birthday!
