Tonight is Walpurgis Nacht and all the ghosts and ghoulies are around. (I was born after dark on 30 April i.e. on Walpurgis Nacht.) If I stay around until after midnight I turn into a pumpkin.

I think that is a misreading of the ancient manuscript. Pumpkins are not in season and I am sure it is something much more sinister and threatening that I am supposed to turn into, a demon, a golem or some other nasty.
