When I graduated from those, I went on to The Princess and The Goblin (George MacDonald), Trixie Belden series (various authors), Anne of Green Gables (L.M. Montgomery) and The Hobbit (Tolkien).

What early books do you remember? Which ones did you love?

There was a series that came along a little later along the same vein called "The three investigators" that was fun as well

Thing's One and Two and the other creetches,
Bartholomew's Oobleck and Yertle the Turtle,
Horton, the Who's and the Grinch,
Reading the Doc's prose is a cinch,
