World's oldest woman enjoys happy 128th
By Simon Freeman and Reuters

A woman whose family believe she is the world's oldest person by more than a decade celebrated her 128th birthday with cake and fancy dress.

Around 200 friends and relatives gathered at Cruz Hernández's home in El Salvador, some bearing cake and others in the costume of Salvadoran mythological heroes.

According to unverified national records, Sta Hernández, who spends most of her time dozing and no longer speaks, was born on May 3, 1878, the same year that Thomas Edison patented his first phonograph.

She worked as a midwife until finally retiring at 124. She now has 60 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great grandchildren.

When asked the secret of her longevity by La Prensa newspaper, she said that she does not bathe during the new moon. She advised that her diet included beer and meat.

Guinness has yet to verify Sta Hernandez's claim, which exceeds the current most eldery human - Ecuadorean Maria Esther de Capovilla - by 12 years. According to the organisation, the longest any woman has ever lived is 122 years. The oldest man was 120 when he died in 1986.
