Emily was the average gal, she was five years younger then her friend Alex. He was handsome and all the girls wanted to be here dates. It happened years ago. Alex moved right next door to her, She never had a chance to see him before he lost his sight. They have been friends right away, he never saw her, she was afraid that if he could see her. She was afraid she wouldn't be someone he would want to do. He hasn't asked to touch her, to "see" her the way the blind could. God how much she loved him.

But it all seemed to get better the longer they have been best friends, he of course was easy for him, at least easy when it comes to walking, he had his stick. But she would watch him. It seemed like to her that he likes her to be his "eyes" which she thought was sweet. She spent a lot of time at Alex's home. Her parent's never spent time with her, and it was because of the money they had. She hated the damn money, she was human and deserved to be loved. Just like other family's.

It was a beautiful spring day, flowers in bloom, it was very nice outside, breeze came at you, but it was nice out so it wasn't cold. She had a key to his place, since really she helped him. Emily was special, she knew how much he would want her to do. She didn't help to much, some people think because your blind that you need to be cradled like a baby. But Emily knew what to do or say to him. She couldn't help but smile.

Walking inside she shut the door "Hun im home" She said with a smile.

God how much she loved him, but if he ever saw her, he would reject her. At least that was what she feared.

There were times when Alex could have cursed his parents. Cursed them in the original meaning of the word. They were cousins, second cousins or something like that. Either way, they gave their only son one special gift. A weakened occular nervous system. A month after his tenth birthday, his eyesight started to rapidly fail. Within six months, he was completely blind. It took another 18 months to figure out what had gone wrong, and why. It took three years for him to stop being angry at his parents.

But he adapted to the blindness quickly. He liked the idea of the seeing eye dog, but he had too many people wanting to pat the dog. It was too disruptive. So, he used a cane instead, and his sharpened senses.

At the suggestion of his Vision Impaired counselor, he was given the ability to move into his own house when he was fifteen. The first year, he had a housemate, Darren, who helped him get used to his new environment, and help him gain confidence to tackle the world. Darren was a big help, but Emily was even bigger.

She is now his oldest friend, by time known. She never saw him as 'the blind guy', only as Alex. She helped him when he needed a hand, and more often than not he returned the favour in kind. They were good friends.

"Hun im home"

"I'm in the kitchen, dear. I've got The Knife." There was one blade in the entire set in the kitchen that seemed to draw blood from someone if he was not careful. 'The Knife' had so far bleed 15 victims. Nothing major, but it always required a band aid to stop the bleeding.

Alex listened as Emily walked through the house to the kitchen. He turned his head to face her proximity, smiling when he caught the scent of her shampoo. He never had the heart to tell her that it was the best scent he had encountered, and it was the best way for him to know she was around.

He carefully put The Knife in the block. "So, my dearest Emily, to what do I owe this pleasure of seeing you this day?" He knew why she was there - he had invited her over for dinner to thank her for her help over the past year. The same thing he had done each year since they first met.

She smiled, she was there for dinner. But she loved playing with him" She laughed sweetly. Walking into his kitchen. She was glad her shoes made a sound so she didn't startle him. Kissing his cheek. When everything seemed to stop she sighed a bit. "Good you didn't cut yourself" She kissed his cheek. "Little old me? well lets see, wanted to visit my best friend, and im here for the dinner that smells wonderful" She giggled again.

"i hope your ok, don't want to see you hurt, i don't do good when you cut yourself." Looking at him, god he was handsome. This was one of the reasons she never wanted him with her. Since she didn't know what would tonight bring.

"So, do tell, who is this best friend of yours that you had gone to visit?" He resumed checking the various posts sitting on the stove. He relied heavily of his smell and hearing to tell where the various parts of the meal were at. Everything was under control, so he turned his attention to Emily.

"Dinner's on track, and I'm happy for you to sit back and relax, but I wont have a fit if you lend a hand." He moved towards the fridge, which took him past Emily. He successfully planted a quick kiss on her cheek. Even before his lips broke contact with her skin, she could feel the heat of her blush.

"What's wrong, Em? I was just thanking you for being my friend. Say, how did that date with Roger go?" Emily didn't seem to be able to find the right guy. He had heard some of the stories, and it seemed that they were more interested in her connections than her. "Tell you what, if you're luck's still running out, I'll set you up on a blind date."

She couldn't help but look down, when he asked what the problem was but she placed her hand on his arm. "Alex.." she said slightly with a shy tone. "i already have someone I want and...frankly it's you" She said with a soft laugh. She placed her hand on his "That's why im nervous that once you touch me, that I will look horrible. I know how you can "see" but i guess there is no point hiding my face"

Alex was dumbfounded. Emily wanted him? His jaw dropped for a few seconds, before returning to an enormous smile. He reached his hand out to touch the side of her face. Not to read it, but to touch her in a reassuring way.

"Emily... why would I be concerned with how you look? You have a beauty that goes beyond how you look. I have always wondered what it would be like to be your boyfriend. But I... I have always thought you were not interested in my that way.

"But to find out that you do..." I guided our lips together, tenderly touching those lips that had talked to me for years, that made me feel like a person, not just some blind guy. Lips that I had dreamed of kissing on and off over the years.

She smiled, she couldn't help but hugged him lightly. When she pulled back a bit, she looked into his eyes. She stroked his cheek. "I love you Alex, and I want to be with you, your very special to me. I see you as a man, but im glad we go out together. I love you, your heart that loves so much. I love the way you see, but I will never hide my face or body again"

Alex's smile if anything grew broader. The taste of her lips was heavenly. And their softness was beyond imagination. How could something feel so soft? He was about to kiss her again when he heard one of the pots reach a boil.

Jumping straight into practical mode, he continued with getting their dinner ready. Of course, there was no time spare to devote directly to Emily, but he would make up for it by giving her a spectacular dinner.

Soon, the delicious aromas of a masala, rise and roti, were drifting through the dining room as the two sat down for dinner. This time, the dinner was different for Alex. This time he was sitting across from the most beautiful woman in his life, one that loved him. One who wanted to be with him.

"Emily... thank you for telling me how you feel about me." He felt his cheeks warm slightly. "I have loved you for years, as my best friend. But it is just the tiniest of steps to love you as someone more special than just my best friend."

He paused to let his heart rate return to something more normal. "Now, let's eat. We can continue to enjoy each other's company afterwards."

She smiled, everything around them vanished, until the stove alerted him he was needed. She watched him, seeing how he cooked. She admired him very much, she wondered how he could do it. Living every day, never to see light. In a world that's always dark. She sat down and looked at the food and had a smile in her voice.

"mmm I love your cooking, looks like there are many reasons why I love you Alex' she giggled, placing her hand on his for a moment. "Your something else alex, very special."

"Well, thank you, Emily," Alex said as Emily's hand touched his. He hadn't expected her to do that, and there was a slight jerking reaction until he realized what happened. "Sorry, Em. I didn't expect you to do that," Alex laughed.

In short order, he had the meals served up, and on their way to the table. "Em, can you get the jug of water out of the fridge please?" While she fetched the jug, he rearranged the seating so they were closer together than originally placed.

As they did whenever they ate together, Alex sat himself down first. It was a simple safety measure from long ago, that became a habit when there was no further need for it.

When Emily sat down, Alex turned to her. "You love me? From the sounds of it, this is something that has been going on for a while. How long has it been, Em? And why haven't you told me sooner?"

She smiled, getting what he needed, she heard his questions. when it came to the first question she looked down. "Going on four years, I didn't think you would want me, im just sorry I didn't talk to you earlie." Looking at him she squeezed his hand "Im just glad I finally told you."

"So, Em, for the last few years, while you have 'loved me', you have been out dating other men? While watching me deal with the women I dated? You knew how they were, didn't you? Either doing it as a 'community service'. Or the ones that got off being sweet to a blind guy by dating him. Or Lord forbid the ones that thought I needed them to look after me." Alex looked a little offended as he started to load his fork.

"Why on earth did you think I wouldn't want you? Why didn't you try and find out?" Alex took a mouthful of his dinner. He pondered the way women thought, and how they did what they did. He couldn't fathom that a woman who loved him in silence for 4 years, seeing him potentially meeting someone else that he would fall in love with, loosing him forever. Alex had strong feelings for Em, loving her like a sister. It would take him a while to adjust to loving her in a different, more personal and passionate way. But it was something he was willing to do.

Once he wasn't so pissed off with her for being so stupid.

She looked at him, she tilted her head to the side "Your angry? what was I supposed to say, you have no reason to be pissy. Because your blind you don't see how people see you, the girls all wanting you" she sighed.

"this was a mistake" She got up and left, and grabbed her bag "Just fucking forget it" Going to the door and left, shutting the door behind her. She sat down on a bench a block away from his home.

"What? No, I had not idea how they 'looked at me'." He heard her stand up, grabbing her bag and going for the front door.

"Emily? Em!! Please, don't -" The door slammed. "Damn it!"

He sat at the table wracked by indecision. Em had heard him talk about all the dates he went on, and how badly they turned out. That not one of them was really interested in him, as a person. And during that time, she had loved him. And she hadn't spoken.

But he didn't know if he should go after her or leave her be. He was her friend, and he wanted to do the right thing. But this was the first time they had ever had a fight.

He took another mouthful of food while he thought about what he'd do. Finally, he decided he would and find her. He quickly found his cane, and headed for the front door.

It was a very cold night, she zipped up her jacket and sighed a little bit. Closing her eyes she didn't want to go home, she just sat there. But when she heard the sound of something tapping. Looking up and saw it was alex. She stood up and stood out.

"Alex what are you doing?" She took his hand on one of his. "Im sorry I just left like that, I guess im to blame"

He tried the bench first. If she wasn't there, there was her favourite tree a bit further around the block near the the little park. After that, he could only hope that she had gone home.

He heard movement ahead, then heard her voice and felt her hand. He quickly took her into a hug. "Em, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you."

He listened to her again. "Look, we're both to blame. Let's get back home. There's food and your fave dessert waiting for you. After we've eaten, we can sort through the mess. OK?"

They started walking back to Alex's house, arm in arm.

She liked being his eyes, she could describe things in a different form since he was blind. Once inside she put her coat on the hook and sighed a bit, helping him to his seat.

"Eat up, my dear. And remember, there is a dessert waiting for you. The one you like the best."

Alex started to think about where things would go with Emily. He was fairly certain that she was a virgin, as was he. When he finally slept with someone, he wanted to make sure they were... a good choice. No of the women he had dated were good choices. Even though quite a few wanted to go to bed on the first date, he never did.

"How lucky am I? My best friend loves me. And loves me more than just a friend." A moment's doubt crossed his mind. "That is right, isn't it?"

She kept eating, she loved it "Man Alex, you should write a cook book" She grinned, in a nice voice. When he said what he did she smiled "Yes, which is why I never let you trace my face. But now I have nothing im afraid of and if you want to, I will let you"

She sighed a little bit "I was afraid of being ugly, but ive never thought im pretty But ive always been told she was ugly, and I thought I was. she looked people

"Em... I'm blind. Even if I read your face, it was of little importance. It's what I hear, what I touch and smell is far more important than how you might look." Alex smiled in a cheeky way. "Well, onetime I was over at your place when you were sixteen. You had flaked on the sofa after spending a night watching trashy videos. I... ummm... read you face then. Sorry."

she looked at him, she couldn't help but laugh "I remember that" she placed her hand on his. "All that matters is what we both feel and think' she leaned over and kissed him softly. "Your something else Alex, your a sweet heart"

"Remember, Em, you were the first person to treat me as a person. That makes you very special to me, regardless of how you might look to others.

So, Em, what are we going to do tonight? I was thinking of us watching a DVD together, but somehow that doesn't have quite the same appeal."

She smiled, she couldn't help but love him even more, she took his hand to her cheek, showing she was smiling. "well why don't we go out for dinner and a nice walk, it's a beautiful day outside"
