Last night I read an excellent non-fiction story by the late Truman Capote, HARD CARVED COFFINS. Nine citizens in a small Western town are murdered, virtually everyone, from the state police to Capote, are confident the serial killer is a local, prominent rancher. But there isnt a hint of evidence to link the man to the murders.
Each of the murder victims receives a hard carved miniature coffin via the mail. Inside each coffin is a photo of themselves. The first two victims climb into a car filled with 9 huge rattlesnakes injected with amphetamine waiting for them.
I suspect Capote was after another IN COLD BLOOD best seller, but the serial killer was never caught.
