Halloween Reads

This is my favorite time of year and I do appreciate all of the suggestions posted here.

Personally I love picking up books about local haunts/cemeteries. The paranormal is fascinating to me.

I live in Appalachia, if you tried to read about every local ghost you'd be reading for the rest of your life. Everyone and their grandma is "haunted" here. We also have aliens right down the road. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly%E2%80%93Hopkinsville_encounter Wherein a family of drunken rednecks saw a series of unarmed creatures in spacesuits and proceeded to shoot the fuck out of them.

I follow them on tumblr.

I didn't know there was a tumblr for them! Is this the one you follow? Thank you! I'm reading through a bunch of them now and eeeeeeeeee!!! So much fun. Even when they're not THAT scary, it's so unsettling to read a bunch of them in a row.

MrCreepyPasta has the sexiest voice...

Didn't know about him either! Coooool :)

His voice is nice! I think I still prefer to read them - scary stories packaged in small, innocuous-looking chunks of text makes for an effective juxtaposition, I think. A voice and image and background music spoils it a little, for me.

I listen to them while I'm running. In the woods. At night.

I also listen to Welcome to Night Vale and some of project guitenburg's classic horror.

Then I forget that I have random video game soundtracks on there (I use the sounds for various phone alerts and whatnot) and last night it went from a creeypasta to the battle theme from FF7 and I was like, "Holy shit- random encounter- what do I need to kill!?"

That shit is programmed deep.

Try EXQUISITE CORPSE by Poppie Z.Brite

Its a tale of HIV infected serial killing cannibals who infect young gay men, restrain them, and eat them one piece at a time. Youll stay the hell outta park restrooms thereafter.

did you spend a lot of time hanging out in park restrooms before you read that or something?

i just made a joke about gay bathroom sex and you ignored it to quote yourself. what is wrong with you?

He had several, but I can't find my favorite, The Great God Pan. Saki's stuff was either surreally disturbing or hilarious (and disturbing), and sometimes both.

I'll try to find some others as they come to me.

I bloody love Saki but I haven't read any in years. Off to the interwebz I go!

The Shining was the scariest book I've ever read, by far.

There were times I would make up excuses to myself to take a break from reading it because I was scared. That's the only book to ever make me do that.

Clive Barker's Books of Blood series is pretty fucked up. Some of my favs are "Pigs Blood Blues", "The Skins of Our Fathers", "The Inhuman Condition", "The Forbidden", "The Madonna", "Babel's Children", and "In the Flesh".

The scariest book I ever read was Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain.

I've just started an old battered one from the seventies. Incubus by Ray Russell. The front blurb says 'more terrifying than The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby combined!'. I remember the film with John Cassavets but not if I enjoyed it or not.
