Penelope Soto, Girl Who Cursed at Miami Judge, Apologizes and Avoids 30-Day Jail Sentence

This past week, video of a teenage girl cursing at and flipping off a judge in Miami went viral. Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat didn’t put up with Penelope Soto’s behavior, doubling her bond and sentencing her to 30 days in jail. After serving four days in jail, Soto appeared in court and apologized to the judge. Her attorneys say she was under the influence of drugs and her remarks were inappropriate.

On Friday, Judge Rodriguez-Chomat told Soto, “I should not even hold you as totally responsible. We live in a society where if you listen to music, every other word is a profanity. We live in a society where young people like you feel that it’s perfectly OK to call all kinds of names to their teachers, to their professors and their friends.”

He then vacated the jail sentence and if Soto can pay $5,000 bond, she’ll be able to leave jail. What do you think of the judge’s reaction and latest sentencing?

I heard she had no prior arrests. If that's true, then I think both she and the judge did the right thing.

If she's pulling a scam and did not mean a word of her apology, then she will pay the higher price eventually anyway. If that time comes then whoever the judge is that she stands before will want to see that the court system has given her every reasonable chance before coming down on her head.

The judge called her back and raised her bail to $10,000.00. That's when she lost it. The judge was being a dick. In the same instance I might have done the same.

Like I said in the other thread: I watched the video several times. She disrespected him throughout the whole time she was standing in front of him. Each time he increased the fine when she did that. Then he gave her 30 days in jail for contempt.

It never ceases to amaze me the growing # of people don't see why punishment for contempt of court and disrespecting the judge are an entirely different set of rules, in his house, that have nothing to do with the crime they are being judged for. He's not her attorney or the prosecutor; he's the one deciding her fate based upon the facts given to him.
