Setting: A lush glen just outside of a small Romanian town,a town prosperous in its growth but still predjudiced against old world ways. The newly elected Mayor of this town vowed to erradicate any and all gypsy bands that entered in or near his town. Many folks living in this town were old school and still believed highly of the gypsies and the curses they were said to be capable of conveying.
On this certain night of the year a small band of Gypsies had stopped to make camp by the large lake outside of this town. Far enough away that the mayor could not do anyting about it unless they came into town.Old laws about nature and the gypsies were hard to break and he could not touch them as long they remianed there.
This band was a large family unit, there were some not related to the bandmaster. He ruled the caravan with a hard fist but had an even softer heart. His wife Nadia had perished several years ago in a fire that consumed their wagon, leaving him to raise his 19 year old daughter alone. Their were many cousins among the group and several strangers who had joined along their journeys. But they had remianed loyal to each other. This night they had pitched the bonfire and Jorge called for a celebration to thank mother earth for what she was providing them.He called for the musicians and dancers, clapping as the festivities began.

Natalya Romanof heard her father's calls for music and dancing. She grinned as she dressed in her dancing clothes, her heart soared when she was able to dance. It seemed like the only time she could be free from the mortal palins of reality. She slid into her colorful clothes and added her hair piece, pulling her waist length black hair back. It hung down her shoulders and back in waves until it touch the top of her buttocks. She added the silver loops earring to her lobes before tunring her emerald green stare at her reflection int the mirror. She stared at herself, still trying to figure out why her father thought she was identical to her late mother. She stood 5 foot 5,slim and toned from years of dancing and hard life of a traveler.
Her arms wore the many bangles around her wrists and the silver dragon arm cuff rested upon her upper arm. She slid the sleeves of her top down until they rested on her upper arms and nodded. She hardly wore makeup, her nature beauty seemed enough. She had many suitors but none had claimed her heart or soul. SHe dreamed many nights of a tall muscular man. Fair of hair and skin, but powerful and rugged in heart. One who swept her off her feet and took her away from her daily trials. Giving herself one more glance over she turned and elft her own wagon going in search of her father.
She smiled as the men and women had already gahtered around the blazing fire.Children sang and played as their parents drank and talked. It was a family oriented unit one she would not change..one she didnt want to change. She knew the more modernied ways of life were quickly killing out the remaining gypsies and soon they would have to face the cold hard facts, life was changing against their ways. She called out as she saw her father talking to Stefan, her childhood friend and confidant.
"Papa..Stefan!"She smiled as her father opened his arms and buried her in a hug. She laughed and pulled free turning to smile at Stefan,he had tried to win her heart as a suitor but had not proven lucky. He would be a friend and nothing more to his Natalya.
Jorge grinned over his daughters head at the forlorn look Stefan got when she failed to notice how he smiled just for her. He shook his head,he had tried to get them together but he too had failed. Natalya was like her mother through and through. She wanted to find love on her own,her own terms. Not what anyone else wanted for her. He had finally given in to her wishes and stopped pushing her so hard. She grabbed Stefan;s hand and led him towards the fire. They had always danced together, moving together as if they were molded for each other. The electricity they gave of when they danced put the whole caravan in th right spirits.
She turned towards him,her eyes giving him that look as he began to sway. Her eyes closed letting the music take her to another place and time. Stefan faded and the light haired man took his place in her fantasy. She danced for the dream lover. The one she knew would one day appear to her.Her feet seemed to not touch the ground as her steps increased, her hips rolled, her arms twirled above her head. She danced for her very soul.
********************
The shots that rang out stopped the music abruptly,Natalya found herself pulled behind Stefan. She peered around him as the sall group of men entered the campsite, guns drawn. The one in front, the cruelest looking one of all leered around at them, his gaze telling her what he thought of her kind. He stopped when Her father stepped inf ront of the caravan crowd.
"There is no need for guns..we are a friendly group, pasing through."her father addressed the men.The man sneered at Jorge and spit on the ground."We have no need for the likes of you around here. I come giving you your once and only warning. I cannot stop you from camping here, but I will not tolerate your gypsy ways into my town."Sneered the man.
"I am Mayor Dubrowsky,I am law in the town. I will make your lives hell if I think you are causing any trouble..any at all."He said lookign around them all,his gaze stopped as Natalya had came from behind Stefan to stand. Her skin crawled under his gaze, she looed away from him. Her gasp cut off in her throat.
The man standing beside the Mayor looking as if he wanted to be elsewhere hit her hard. It was the light haired man from her dreams. He seemed much larger in real life, but it WAS him. She swallowed hard and tried to llok away, but something kept her gaze on him. She felt her cheeks flame red when his eyes met hers.Mayor Dubrowsky saw the look and yanked on the man's ar, causing the much larger man to almost growl at him."Come we need to get back..we have wasted enough time with this trash. As Captain of my security you are in chage of making sure things are followed through here."The mayor told the man she stared at,finally she brke her gaze and watched them leave.
Her father was not blind to her reaction,he pulled her to the side and leaned close to her ear."He is not of our kind,he will bring you nothing but heartache."He whispered softly to her, looking at the retreating backs of the men.
