ok... i know this is the dreaded doctor to see... mostly why i havent been to see one yet... and i'm just wondering if it's important that i do...

i'm almost 20, not sexually active, and scared to death of going.

Even though you're not yet sexually active, you still should start having annual exams now. There are new pap smears that will identify suspiscious cells very early on, and the gynecologist should give you information about how to properly do a breast self-exam every month. You're probably thinking, I'm young, why do I need to do that, well even in your twenties there may be problems. (I was 28 when I had a lump removed from my breast, luckily it wasn't malignant, but it was very scary.) Basically, what I'm saying is yes, it's important. It's better for your health overall and over the long term to have the annual exam.

As for the scary part, ask some of your friends for recommendations. Call for an appointment and tell them your concerns. If you live in a larger city, there will probably be some gynecologists who work mainly with young women. Still, it's nerve racking and I don't know of anyone who really doesn't dread that annual visit. Ask a friend, sister, your mother, someone you have complete confidence in to accompany you. Write down any questions you have so you don't forget them once you get there. You'll meet with the gynecologist in an office first to discuss your history and to answer any questions. Then comes the exam (and it truly is grin and bare it).

E-mail me if you have other specific questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

gyno exams

i know it is scary for women to get those things. my wife is the same way.
but, understand that it is for your safety and health.
too many things can be lurking inside where you women cant tell.
my wife went for one and cancer cells were found. she did not know they were there.
i for one am glad she went when she did.
she still gets nervous whenever she makes her appointment to go for her pap smears. i can understand that.
but the reasoning outways the concequenses.

ok... so i'll go, but how and where do i even begin to look for a gyno to see? should i just ask my doctor for a recommendation?

now comes the next problem.....

my mom is gonna want to go with me, and i dont want to share the experience with my mother.. or my father for that matter.... how do i go about telling them that i should go, especially since my mom will try to tell me i have to go to her doctor (which i dont want to do)? and how do i tell my mom that i dont want her to go with me?

That is a toughy.
Other then out and out telling? I would suggest a public clinic for possible recommendations. Though if your in the U.S. not exactly sure how they work down there for that.

WHY NOT TRY PLANNED PARENTHOOD...EXAMS ARE EITHER FREE OR EXTREMELY AFFORDABLE (AROUND $20) AND CONFIDENTIAL!

Yes, you do. Me!

The pap test part of the annual exam does not bother me at all. If you relax your muscles, it is a piece of cake. No pain. The part of the exam using the speculum is actually done very quickly (at least by my gyno) and I'm usually talking and joking through the whole thing. Do NOT let yourself get terrified of this part of the annual exam.

Ask to see the speculum ahead of time so you know what it looks like and can see for yourself that it really isn't that big. Tell the doc you are not sexually active (they'll have asked you by this point anyway) and request that he/she be particularly gentle with you or you'll never darken their door again (worked for me the first time I went for an exam on my own.) I'd suggest a female doctor, only because you are likely to feel more comfortable with a female than a male if you aren't used to being naked around men, much less having them touch you quite so intimately. A female doctor won't seem so strange to you and will be one less thing to stress you out.

Now, the part about your mom going with you. My mom dragged me to HER OB/GYN when I was 14 for my first exam. She stayed in the room with me. The doctor was male and they always had (maybe still do?) a female in the room with them for the exam as a witness. Anyway, I had no idea what to expect, the doctor was about 65 years old and very rough, and it was horrible. It scared the crap out of me and I didn't go back for another exam for far too many years after that initial bad experience. Don't let that happen to you.

One other hint: I think it is easier to get an exam if I have a bald pussy. There is no hair to get in the way and be "pinched" in the speculum when it is inserted.

They aren't as bad as people make them out to be. I usually dread going but once I get there isn't too bad and by the time I leave I wonder why I made it such a big deal in my head. A word of advise though....."going to a male gyn is like taking your car to a mechanic who has never owned a car" Find a female doctor and as everyone else has already said, discuss with her all your concerns. I guarantee that nothing you can say to her will be new or shocking....she's heard it all and seen it all. You'll do great...just be sure to go!

the only reason i think i'm scared about going is cuz of the thread i read a couple of weeks ago with some of the horror stories of the trips there.... if anyone wants to read for a refresher or you havent seen it yet http://literotica.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=33299&highlight=gynos

and i know i should go.. and from all the votes of confidence about going, i think i will... but avoiding the whole parent issue by waiting till i get back to school and going to see the doctor on campus. i've been nervous about going, so i havent yet... and since i've been waiting for awhile, i dont really see what another 2 months will hurt right now
