I say don't let unregistered users post. If they haven't got the balls to register they don't have a right to post an opinion.

A double-edged sword

Unregistered postings can be discordant, but they can also be the most honest. You must take the good with the bad in the free and unfettered exchange of ideas and opinions.

I'm sorry but I find it hard to beleive someone who isn't honest enough to even give themselves an identity.

Sometimes the posting comes from people who merely lurk, they wish to pass comment and not necessarily join up in order to do so. To require registration to merely comment can shortchange the Board of some very provocative and thoughtful ideas. Conversely, I agree it could also limit the foolishness, but "you pays your money and takes your chances".

It's just a pity so many "unregistered" users are obviously registered users who lack the courage to use their own names.

So you're saying your real name is bigrednz? How honest are you being with us? Why not post as your given name? What - you don't want your family to know you surf adult sites?

Not everyone feels comfortable registering. Not every unregistered user is a troll. I'm not a troll. There are many posters who post assholish garbage under registered names as well. Judge the message by its content, not by the titles beneath the name.

a history tutor of mine a long time ago used to hate the term "double-edged sword"....;)

don't know why i posted....

A cutting remark

I wonder why? Not all swords were honed on both edges, the "double-edged" ones were meant to cut both ways, hence the cliche.

Cliche's are loved widely round here, too.

Unregistered posters are only ever a problem when they appear with an intent to harm, to sow discord and confusion. Otherwise, they're welcome, really, as possibly more honest postings from regulars (if, indeed, anyone here is actually regular in some way) who might not want thier normal noick associated with that particular viewpoint.

There are countpoints in everyday life.

We vote in secrecy. Why? So we can vote our conscience without having anyone look over our shoulders and know our leanings.

We take part in anonymous polls conducted via the phone and by mail (snail and e). Why? So those conducting the poll can garner honest opinions.

Anonymous postings, then, are simply an extension of what we all do in our everyday lives. If not done to hurt anyone, why feel strongly against them?

I've never posted here anonymously but to each their own according to need. At some point, i might need to, or just want to, and will wish to have that choice at that time in the future.

In a perfect world we could all say exactly what was on our minds and have our words judged for their own value, and not have unfair or inaccurate connotations placed on them, but personally, I don't trust people to do that (examine the statements I or other's make without bias drawn from who said them.)

I have never posted as anonymous since registering, but I did a couple of times before hand I think simply because I didn't come here often and I couldn't be bothered registering.
