Perhaps one of the moderators can answer this one for me.

I am in the planning stages of a "coming of age" type story I plan to write. While the characters will all be over 18 in the main part of the story, its going to be a little difficult to meet the requirements of no underage sex on this one. After all, someone's sexuality does not just mysteriously appear, fully bloomed, on their 18th B-day. I want to add some context and background to the characters but at the same time I want to do it within the accepted guidelines of Lit. This background material will not be sexually graphic but may mention some sexual activity. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about doing this within Lit's parameters? This may be almost impossible to pull off, but I would like your feedback.

On Lit it does. You cannot describe any sexual activity prior to their 18th birthday. While you could maybbe describe a girl giving head on her 18th birthday the most you might be able to allude to is that she had talent (suggesting prior experience), but you can't have her say she's been giving head for years.

Hard to deal with I know, and not realistic, but their site, their rules. They do have to consider the current political clime.

You may allude to past experience. You may even give some background on his/her sexual experience prior to eighteen. What you cannot do, is provide any graphic detail, nor set characters below the age limit in sexually provocative situations.

Some of my characters have ahd kids. it isn't that you can't write them or even make them major characters, but they can't even walk in on mommy and her lover by accident. Similarly, you can say a girl lost it at 15 or that she was tired of casual sex, etc. etc. but you can't describe her looseing it.

The eighteen rule is hard and fast when it comes to graphic description, but it isn't a set in stone deterrent to providing a background for a character.

Thank You Colleen. What you described is somewhat along the lines of what I imagined. Like I said in my original post, I am comfortable with picking up the graphic side of the story at age 18, but not how to develop the character without some historical background.

Your best course of action would be to write it and then PM laurel asking if it would mee tthe guidelines. i fnot, she can probably give you a hand in making it lit acceptable.

best ofluck
