A story of Corruption
By caela and myself
Eric walked out of the room into the hallway. He didn't like what he had seen.
His best friend, Thomas, for over 40 years, would probably not make it beyond this week. Every day Eric had come to see him and every day his friend was withering away more and more. He believed that even his friend knew his time was short. He had made sure Eric promised to show up here tomorrow night at eight o'clock sharp, even though Eric always had since his admittance. Thomas stressed it was important that he did.
The hospital was quiet in this wing. Other than the soft pad from cushioned soles of the occasional nurse the silence was disturbed by the intercom's request for faceless names and doctors.
Somberly he headed down the hall.
Eric hated hospitals and the serious, sterile atmosphere. Too much sickness, pain and dying were in behind these walls for him to ever feel at ease. He made it a habit to walk through the maternity ward before leaving, just to remind himself it wasn't all bad here.
Stepping out into the evening he lit up a much needed cigarette and watched the smoky exhale hang in the breezeless air. It was a nice and warm out. A stark contrast to the far too cool air in the hospital that always chilled him.
Taking a drag it lit up his tired face. The exhale had the sound of melancholy, he was lost in thought.
Eric had grown up in the same neighborhood as did his friend. As far back as he could remember they had been close friends. They remained so through highschool, college and beyond. Tom married and raised a family while Eric never did but this still didn't bring their seperation. Eric just became part of the family. Some nights and weekends would find them together at Thomas' house either repairing something, putting around the yard or catching the games on the television.
As close as they were, Thomas did not know about everything when it came to Eric. He knew that his single friend often entertained different women, but he had no idea that his friend Eric also lived in a darker world.
Eric never let his friend into his secret because he saw how happy Thomas was with his two car white fence dog and cat suburban family life. Eric's world was very different. A world where men and women reveled in dominance and submission, pain and pleasure, the taboo and deviant.
He put out the cigarette then walked to his car, heading back to his world.
