I hovered, silent and invisible, ever vigilant, over my ward. Throughout her life, I had manifested a more physical presence only a few times - and never as anything, I hoped, that might betray my presence to the daemonic agents of the Adversary. They, too, were oft vigilant, though their goals were, of course, opposed to those of the Light.
She had a destiny, though it was not something to which I had been made privy. She had been raised strictly by her parents, but lovingly, and an innocent purity thus resided in her that was strong. Such an innocence could of course not last for ever, and for that I grieved, but that was the way of the mortal world. The power of Choice was one of humanities greatest strengthes, and greatest weaknesses.
Now, she had passed through the trials and tribulations of youth, and had entered adulthood. I sensed the time of her destined fate was nearing. By now, despite my carefully concealed presence, the Adversary was doubtless aware too of her coming fate, and would seek to sway her course to shape the future to his benefit.
So it was that I hovered, silent and invisible, over my ward, as she walked for the first time down the path to the college to which she had enrolled. Here, I sensed, peril lurked, and the servants of the Adversary waited, ready.
