As you may know, this was a long weekend here in Canada. Victoria Day.

Every Victoria Day at a local park named Ashbridges Bay we have a fireworks display. People come from all over the city to watch.

Damn few pick up after themselves!

I took a walk along there just now. There's a garbage can about every thirty metres and I dumped a double armful of garbage into each one.

Worse, a couple of hundred people were there as well and I was the only one picking up junk.

I'm not Canadian, but thank you for picking up and keeping everything clean. The world needs more civic and ecological minded people like you.

Doesn't that just make you hate humanity? I HATE litter and I think littering is a shitty inconsiderate thing to do.

Yes. Thank you for helping. I try to do that at parks and sports fields around here.

Rob,

I have this truly nasty habit when I go diving. I carry several goody bags in the pockets of my BC. As I drift along I grab any junk I find on the bottom and bag it. Sometimes this habit pisses off the crew of the dive boat, especially when they help me haul these bags back onboard.

I'm one of a very few divers I know who do this. (My father does the same thing, who do you think I learned it from?)

I have found some neat things doing this, and I have even made some money from it. (I save any lead I find then sell it to the Dive Shops so they can make dive weights.) I have even gotten myself in a bit of trouble once doing this. (Because of a full bag of lead on one dive I have added a lift bag to my gear.)

A Small Ray of Hope

Two little girls at my school asked for plastic bags and spent their entire lunch recess picking up trash scattered around the playground. They picked up two big garbage bags full in about 30 minutes.

Aww bless. Is there any way they can be rewarded to a) show them that good deds are sometimes rewarded and b) be an example to the others?

School's already out. Yesterday was the last day. They were praised and thanked by all the teachers on the playground.

glynndahh that is so awesome. I must admit I get mad at a lot of teenagers in this town. I take the minx to the playground and have to clean up all there stuff. That has included condoms on the boats and things at times. Its nice to hear about other people picking up especially the kids.

Thanks for picking up the litter, Rob. People who litter have no respect for the earth or other people. Karma will come around on them - in their next life, they'll be dung beetles.

One thing I hate is people smoking in public places and the other thing I hate the most is them, stepping on the cigerrette and leaving it on the pavement. Sadly, it is a very common sight in all of Asia.

As if that's not enough, people laugh at others who pick up those flattened smokes and toss it into the trash can.

I smoke. I smoke in public. However, when I'm finished with my cigarette I strip it and either put it in my pocket or the nearest trash can. The people who met me and my husband in Chicago can attest to that. I can't stand the butts being left on the ground either. I've picked them up as well.

My daugter's class went to the local park Monday and at the end of the day the teacher sent each of them to pick up trash. My daughter was irritated that she had to pick up someone else's trash. Her statement was, "I didn't leave MY trash, why should I pick up someone else's?" While she had a good point, I had to explain to her that it still had to be picked up and it was a kind thing for her to do. She did it, but she wasn't happy about it. I have seen her, on other occasions, pick up the trash around her and put it in the trash can. I'm guessing that this time really bothered her because the first instructions the teacher gave were, "Do not leave your trash on the ground. When you are finished, put your trash in the trash can."

I smoke, in public. I'll continue until they make driving vehicles with internal combustion engines illegal. That's a habit I find most annoying.

I make sure I tamp the heel of my pipe into some place where it won't offend delicate sensibilities though.

:) Yeah I hate that but we're making the world better for ourselves, even if we sometimes curse others LOL

AS a child, my family used to go to the Love-ins and anti-war demonstrations, and I remember being shocked by the garbage left everywhere afterwards... :(
This is called "The Tragedy Of The Commons" and Wikipedia has a good entry on the subject;"The tragedy of the commons is a type of social trap that involves a conflict over resources between individual interests and the common good. The term derives originally from a parable published by William Forster Lloyd in his 1833 book on population. It was then popularized and extended by Garrett Hardin in his 1968 Science essay "The Tragedy of the Commons".[1] However, the theory itself is as old as Aristotle who said: "That which is common to the greatest number has the least care bestowed upon it"

I often see its effects in my own family's living room.
