I know we've had a number of Group MVP threads. I'd like this one to be for anyone who has actually done business with them. I'm fairly certain I remember one or two people who have taken the plunge and tried them out.

I got contacted by them today (and the offer included actual money, not just copies of published work), so I'd like to know if anyone else has done business with them or not.

I haven't actually done business with them. They contacted me on 15 May. I checked the threads here, and wrote back on 17 May, saying 'tell me more'. Still waiting . . .

i agreed to them publishing one of my stories but during the editing process they discovered there was some gay sex in it which, when they removed it spoilt the flow of the story. apparently they don't like man on man sex. woman on woman is fine. maybe there is something in Canadian law which prevents you publishing descriptions of gay sex.

that was in April and they were supposed to be getting back to me.

i found them to be friendly and quite up front. some people worry about them ripping them off. as the stories in question are already on this site for anyone to see for free i don't have a problem with somebody printing mine and making some money out of it.

they promised to supply me with 50 copies of any novel of mine they publish or slip me some coin of the realm if they placed any of my shorter stories in one of their monthlies.

I agreed to having 3 of my stories published in print digests. As payment I received 5 magazines including the 3 in which my stories were published.

Gay sex prohibition in these magazines has nothing to do with Canadian law, mine is one of the few countries in the world where gay marriage is recognized. The reason man on man sex isn't wanted is primarily a marketing decision and has nothing to do with skill, talent or plot. These are the most obvious of stroke magazines.

They also offered to take any stories I wanted to submit to them and would pay approximately 2 cents (Canadian  ) per word.

The primary thing you should take into consideration, if you are Canadian is are you applying for a National Arts Council Literary Grant? In order to be eligible, a writer/poet must be paid for 4 published short stories in print, 40 published pages of printed fiction, 10 published and printed poems (and I think there are separate guidelines for screenplays, plays and journalism) regardless of genre and yes, payment in copies is still counted as remuneration. This could net you $10,000 dollars toward writing a novel or getting your poems published. There are stipends and bursaries also available if you wanted to take courses and attend seminars.

You don't have to be an MFA to qualify to apply, all you have to do is publish your smut.

Hold on, doing some math... 2 x 3500 (avg length of one of my pieces)= $70/Canadian.

Not a bad deal... but it would be a low-rent price for the hell those stories put me through.

At this point, I've put all publishing ideas on hold, spoken to the editor who was pressuring me for my vampire series of short stories, and told her if she still wants them at a later date, I'll be open to the idea, but right now, I just need to write. If I lose my shot at publishing this because I waited, oh well. I've got time to try again.

Thanks for the responses. I don't think I want to give up a "novel" for $150 (though I have no idea what they consider to be a novel), but I'm considering going the short story route. It could be a nice start. Get a little money and a small publishing credit.

it isn't about the money

i suppose everybody who posts on this on other sites wants to be able to hold up a publication and say "I've been published."

money is soon spent but your book or story wiil remain on file somewhere forever.

Sales to MVP

There are some other threads around that address this, but I can't seem to locate them. I just returned from being away for a month, and in the big pile of mail I pcked up from the Post Office was a check for $150 from MVP Publishing, and a sample copy of the book they have published. The name of the book is "The Erotic Adventures of George Boxlicker" and it is classified as a novel because of the ongoing characters, but is actually seven stories I wrote in 2003, including the story that appeared in the Winter Holiday contest that year. :D

That is not a lot of money, of course, but it is more than I have ever made from writing anything else, or anywhere else. I am including this info because I have read other threads unfairly castigating this publishing company as ripoff artists. They may not pay much, but they do pay. :)

 Nice, one, Box, you're a pro.

I guess it helped having a real life name like George Boxlicker, too

Box, love, I'm so glad you posted this. I just shipped them one of my novels to publish. Well, actually two but they've only agreed on the one. You've just made my day.

ETA'd:Oops...and congratulations. That is wonderful.
