Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) announced plans Thursday to introduce a bill that will “aggressively” phase out the H-1B visa program and eventually eliminate it completely.
The proposal comes just days after President Trump defended bringing foreign workers into the U.S.
Greene’s bill would eliminate the H-1B visa program with an exemption only for medical professionals, such as doctors and nurses. The Georgia Republican said the bill would allow up to 10,000 H-1B visas to be awarded annually for these positions, but that even this provision could be phased out over 10 years.
The legislation would also “take away the pathway to citizenship, forcing visa-holders to return home when their visa expires,” Greene said in a video posted to the social platform X, adding that it will “restore the original intent of the visa: for it to be temporary.”
“These visas were intended to fill a specialty occupational need at a given time,” the lawmaker continued. “People should not be allowed to come and live here forever. We thank them for their expertise, but we also wish them well so they may return to their own country.”
She called the H-1B program “riddled with fraud and abuse” and said it had been “displacing Americans for decades.
