Green Energy Useless during Cold Snaps

How’s that green deal thing working out? The solar power from all this sun combined with the frozen wind turbines in Texas? Oh and moving us from Trumps energy independence to once again getting oil from the Middle East should work out great for everyone!

Evidence, BB?

It works in the UK and Europe.

Maybe Texans are just as stupid as you?

The socialist Democrats want wind Turbines all over the USA.

It’s 7 degrees in Dallas right now, Turbines are frozen and we are having rolling blackouts. Some power out for over 2 hours.

The geniuses who wrote The Green New Deal can suck it.

The green new deal has nothing to do with you current issue( it doesn't exist anywhere yet) which is totally on your REPUBLICAN leaders, the infrastructure they have supported and their lack of planning. I thought you folks down their were all in on Oil...what happened?

I'll wait for an answer?

Huh?

Huh?

I suspect that it is a lack of investment in grid infrastructure for decades. Extreme weather can short out power lines and if there is no back-up? Power outages.

The UK isn't exempt. Our National grid gets close to failure every cold winter day. So far we have been lucky but even trying to build a new set of pylons attracts massive opposition from people who do not understand the issues. To some extent, our green initiatives are helping because more power is generated locally.

I can see six off-shore wind farms from my house; there are two large solar-powered arrays locally and Europe's largest is about to start building ten miles away. There are two bio-mass generators and many people have solar panels on their roof. Apart from that, we can swap power with France and Belgium to cover peak usage at different times.

But parts of the UK are more vulnerable to grid problems. Even paying for improvements to the grid has been a political hot potato. The National Grid wanted a surcharge on all electricity bills to pay for a ten-year plan of enhancements. Consumer groups, politicians, and a government regulator refused the full amount so it is now a fifteen-year plan. I hope that will be enough.

PS: An aside. Decades ago a new boss took over a large industrial site in Birmingham. On his first day, he was taken on a tour. He was shown the massive steam engine for generating electricity if the power from the National Grid failed. It was impressive in glossy paint and gleaming brass. He was told it would be started when the power failed.

He said:" OK. Show me. Start it NOW!"

Three hours later it was up to pressure and it started to run. But steam leaked everywhere and it could only produce one-third of the designed load.

He replaced it with two trailer-mounted diesel generators that would start in seconds and produce more than twice the designed output of the steam engine which became a repaired museum exhibit.

Ice and Snow, Sleet is no respecter of politics failure to trim trees.

Most of our power lines are above ground and around here run through woodlands.

Add Wind or/ and ice and snow and there it is.

Cold and darkness.
