In order for women to make it through the training, it was necessary to lower the standards. This is a dumb idea, but PC trumps everything else.

The military has to be made safe for all of the non-military types who want to join and enjoy the benefits while being unfit for actual duty. The Navy just granted 45,000 waivers for fat people too out of shape to pass the physical requirements. Normally these fat folks would be surveyed right out of the service, but with war on the horizon, we don't want to shut down a friggin fleet.
