Greece PM Alexis Tsipras blasts Turkey on Twitter for shooting down jet
'Fortunately our pilots are not mercurial as yours against the Russians,' Tsipras tweets

A highly unusual online exchange took place on Twitter between the prime ministers of Greece and Turkey late Sunday before the former deleted his tweets — but only from the English version of his account. The official English-speaking account of Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras (ΓåòTsipras—eu) posted four tweets addressed to his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu, needling him about Turkey's downing of a Russian jet and Turkey's violations of Greek airspace.

"To Prime Minister Davutoglu: Fortunately our pilots are not mercurial as yours against the Russians .EuTurkey," Tsipras tweeted.

"What is happening in the Aegean is outrageous and unbelievable .EUTurkey" Tsipras continued. "We're spending billions on weapons. You — to violate our airspace, we — to intercept you .EUTurkey," Tsipras said in a third tweet, referring to intrusions of Turkish planes into Greek airspace, which Turkey contests, and Greek and Turkish pilots frequently buzzing each other.

Tsipras said the two countries should focus on saving refugees, not on weapons.

"We have the most modern aerial weapons systems — and yet, on the ground, we can't catch traffickers who drown innocent people .EUTurkey," the Greek premier said in a fourth tweet.

Davutoglu chose to respond to only the first tweet and not engage in a detailed dialogue.

"Comments on pilots by Γåòatsipras seem hardly in tune with the spirit of the day. Alexis: let us focus on our positive agenda," ΓåòAhmet—Davutoglu responded.

Turkey releases recording of agitated warnings to Russian plane before shooting it down

The Russian and Turkish leaders are often compared to each other. Both are populist, frequently crack down on critics and often revert to anti-Western rhetoric. They had enjoyed close relations until recently, despite differences over Syria, and regularly exchanged visits. In September, Erdogan travelled to Moscow where he and Putin attended the opening of a new mosque, and they also met separately at the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit hosted by Turkey.

Russia was the biggest source of Turkish imports last year, worth $25 billion, which mostly accounted for Russian gas supplies. It also is the largest destination for Turkish exports, mostly textiles and food, and Turkish construction companies have won a sizable niche of the Russian market.

Erdogan once seemed to be a more reasonable man then his predecessors. He was even close to bring Turkey into the EU. It all changed with the wiggly behavior of the EU regarding that entry. Since then, he made huge steps backwards.

Russia vs Turkey would inflame all the Muslim majority ex-Soviet SSRs. They can't take that chance.

Greece vs Turkey. Would let Russia assist Greece against a regional rival. NATO and EU would be scurrying to get both sides talking and Russia would flood Greek tiny economy with money. And rile up the more nationalist extremists.

Greece and Turkey old enemies. Wouldn't take much to inflame that old rivalry.

I visualize an El Greco turkey painting.

I smell and taste a very greasy turkey.

I recall that Greeks are mutant Turks.

I await the next Balkan-Aegean war.

Diplomacy

Taking and controlling Greece was always important for the Turkish player... Allying with Austria helped.

After the Muslim Turks took over the Byzantine Empire they had a huge hand in Europe. They even laid siege to Vienna, Austria. Byzantines were more Greek than anything even when calling themselves Roman. Only after Mustafa Kamal's secular coup finished off the Ottomans did Turkey's real interest in Europe fade. But the Greeks made a stab at reconquering Turkey after WW1 and ran into Kamal and the Turkish nationalists. They've been squabbling over outlying island since like Cyprus since.

Turkey would crush Greece in 5 minutes - but the Greeks are so unimportant the Turks wouldn't even bother.

Europe will eventually pay Turkey billions to keep the bulk of Syrian refugees in Turkey. If they don't pay up, Turkey will open the gates.

Probably best for Turkey....they don't want their economy to slide and society destroyed.
