Is it just the mood I'm in lately (downloading various un-known to me tracks by the guy) or can someone prove to me that there is a better rock and roll/blues singer than Roger Chapman. (Family, Streetwalkers, Shortlist)?

Well?

Well, I think I can prove it. I've got a recording of Roger Chapman saying "Hello. I'm Roger Chapman. And I just wanted to say that although I have a wonderful rasping gravelly voice and a superb inimitable vibrato, on the whole, I think that Rod Stewart is a better singer than me."

Roger Chapman appreciation society

Couple of downloads here not sure if they're the live versions which are much better.

Shape of things: sad
House behind the sun: rocking but not a rocker

You're right Joe, Rod does come a very good second but he could never write a Chappo song.

That new Look At Me I'm A Pop Singer winner sounds like he has potential if they write something properly for him to sing instead of covering Dopey Collins.

Rock and roll has become such a generic term that I don't think you can quantify elements of it anymore.

Metallica, Motorhead, and Iron Maiden are all classified as rock and roll.

At the same time Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, and the Mamas and the Papas are classified as rock and roll as well.

Can you really compare one to the other? I don't think so. It's very apples to oranges.

I don't think Momma Cass (nevermind the fact that she's no longer with us) could sing "one", any more than I think James Hetfield could sing "California Dreamin".

A good, or great voice depends on the style of the music whether the voice goes with it or not.

I was lucky enough to see Family live at hyde park, many years ago. I forget the actual year, but I remember it was a lovely day. The trees were orange and purple and there were a lot of floating faeries and porpoises swimming in the air that lapped at the wings of the diaphanous phoenix

Who's he?

Gauche put in a link. He was a british R&B singer, a contempory of Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Rod Stewart. Never made it as big as those guys, but he had a great voice. He had a unique warbling sound that was almost comical at times. click the link, if you want to hear him.

Downloaded the tunes from the webpage. Good stuff, nice voice. A bit too strained for my tastes, but each to his own.

Chapman's good, but I still like Jagger, Axl Rose and Meat Loaf's voices better.

Can't hold a candle on "how how how"
What about "Boom boom boom"?

Nah, I won't compare voices, but for the 'soul' of a tune I do prefer Hooker or Redding (Otis) vis-a-vis textured voices.
