Hi all,

I know there have been threads like this in the past, so appologies if it stagnates straight away, but all the ones I found were actually quoting the lyrics themselves. I think it would be cool to build up a list of the songs with the best lyrics, decided by everyone. Could be a great way to discover new artists and have some interesting debates. I'm not quite sure how it would work, maybe atleast three people have to agree on a song before it is added? I Suppose we'll see how many people are interested. I'll post a few to start off with:

Time - Pink Floyd
One of us Cannot Be Wrong - Leonard Cohen
Mr. Tambourine Man - Bob Dylan
Snuff - Slipknot
Hurt - Johnny Cash (I appreciate this is originally by Nine Inch Nails, but I Johnny puts so much feeling into it, open to debate of course)
Jeff Buckley - Forget Her

There are many more obviously but lets see how it goes. (Oh and I'm awaiting a Kanye West joke from the title :D)

If your point is the lyrics then what difference does it make who sings it?

Would it not be better to post just the name of the song as a link, not all the lyrics? Discussions broken up by loads of lyrics would be a bit anoying, we can listen to the lyrics ourselves, or find them if they are hard to hear.

Cool songs, not sure on the lyrics, they are good, but maybe not thaat good. We'll see what others think.

J Cool, yeah I was thinking that, so I suppose it should be the original really, give them credit for the writing. Just think Cash's version is epic. :p

It's hard to beat "Everybody Knows" by Leonard Cohen.

That's what I know.

Ooh wow havn't got that, it's not in his greatest hits of first three albums. On it now... Very much looking forward to finding more great Leonard Cohen songs.

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes

Music is beyond the words.

It's Cohen's voice, his original musical set up.

Yeah, very cool song, although I do find songs that follow very set structures in each line a little bit dull. Still a beauty though.

So does anyone agree or a disagree with any of the suggestions? I'll make a list in bold of the songs we agree on. :)
