Greatest Love Ballads

Unquestionably, without a doubt for me its Van Morrison

I'll Be Your Lover, Too
I'll be your man
I'll understand
And do my best to take good care of you
Yes I will
You'll be my queen
I'll be your king
And I'll be your lover too
Derry down green
Colors my dream
A dream that's daily coming true
When day is through
I will come to you
And tell you of your many charms

You'll look at me
With eyes that see
And melt into my waiting arms
And so I come
To be the one
Who's always standing close to you

Reach out for me
So I can be
The one who's always reaching out for you
I'll be your king
You'll be my queen
And I'll be your lover too.

Two songs not true ballads but have that connotation for me.

Sonic Youth ~ Wish Fulfillment

I think of an old gf, the mix I made her, and how much it summed up our relationship. Its an interesting song in that it is done by a band with a married couple but wasnt written by either of them. Sometimes when I play 'dirty', the disc in which the song resides, I skip this song.

WISH FULFILMENT

I SEE YR WISHES ON THE WALL,
AND THAT'S ALRIGHT WITH ME
I SEE YOU RUN TO MAKE A CALL,
HOPING THAT THERE'S SOMEONE FREE
YOUR LIFE AND MY LIFE THEY DON'T TOUCH AT ALL,
AND THAT'S NO WAY TO BE
YOU'VE NEVER SEEMED SO FAR...
WHAT'S REAL? WHAT'S TRUE?
I AIN'T TURNIN MY BACK ON YOU
WHERE YOU GOIN? WHERE YOU BEEN?
MAKING WISHES, WATCHING DREAMS?
IT MIGHT BE SIMPLE, IT MIGHT BE TRUE
I MIGHT BE OVERWHELMED BY YOU
YOU MIGHT BE EMPTY -
THE WAY YR EYES JUST LOOK RIGHT THROUGH
IT'S SUCH A MESS NOW ANYWAY
WISH FULFILMENT EVERY DAY
I DON'T BELIEVE YOU -
NOW I CAN'T HEAR A WORD YOU SAY
I SEE YOU SHAKIN IN THE LIGHT,
READIN THE HEADLINE NEWS
THE OTHERS AREN'T QUITE SO BRIGHT,
YOU WANT THEM TO CHOOSE YOU
I COULD ALMOST SEE YR FACE TONIGHT,
SINGIN SIMPLE RHYTHM AND BLUES
YOU'LL ALWAYS BE A STAR...
SHAKE IT, BABY, C'MON SCREAM
DID I SEE YR FACE IN A MAGAZINE?
YOUR DOUBT, IT LEAVES ME SORE
I CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE
IT'S MY FAVORITE SHOT OF YOU
YOU LOOKED SO PRETTY, YR EYES WERE TRUE
I'M STILL ON YR SIDE -
IN SPITE OF EVERYTHING YOU DO
WE'RE ONLY BLOOD ON LIGHT ON LIFE
NEW PRETTY PICTURES EVERY NIGHT
COME WISH BESIDE ME -
DON'T YOU KNOW YOU KNOW WHAT'S RIGHT?

sonic youth - dirty (1992)

The second song that comes to mind is Who Does She Hope To Be?. by Sonny Sharrock. It has no lyrics but invokes feelings in myself about that initial foray inside a woman and then the distance that sometimes follows. The songs ends on a question, almost as if its cut off, it was a bold move when making the disc and resonsates as intended.

The disc it is from is called "Ask The Ages."

When my "first love" came back to town this past Christmas, he and I were out at a local restaurant one evening and he played a song on the JukeBox for me... said he has always thought of me when he hears this song. Yes, I did tear up! Don't know who sings it... Paul Davis maybe? I think it's called... That's How Much I Feel

one line in particular, he took my hand, made deep eye contact and sang the last verse straight from his heart...

How's your life been going on
I've got a wife now... for years we've been going strong
Oh no
There's just something that I've got to say
Sometimes when we make love
I still can see your face

That's how much I feel for you baby

I know I just posted... but...

forgot to name some of my favorite love ballads...

Bed of Roses ~ Bon Jovi

I'm the only one ~ Melissa Etheridge

It's your love ~ Tim Mcgraw and Faith Hill

Shameless ~ Garth Brooks

Amazing ~ Lonestar

My favorite... In These Arms ~ Bon Jovi

You want commitment... take a look into these eyes
They burn with fire... yeah... until the end of time
And I would do anything
I'd beg, I'd steal, I'd die
To have you in these arms tonight...

Baby I want you
like the roses want the rain
you know I need you
like the poet needs the pain

If you were in these arms tonight
I'd hold you, I'd need you
I'd get down on my knees for you
and tell you everything's alright
I'd want you... I'd please you
until the end of time
if you were in these arms tonight...

Cleaning my car this morning and found my long lost Phantom CD, and it had been a long time since I heard this:

ALL I ASK OF YOU

No more talk of darkness, forget these wide-eyed fears.
I'm here, nothing can harm you. My words will warm and calm you.
Let me be your freedom, let daylight dry your tears.
I'm here, with you, beside you, to guard you and to guide you.

Say you love me every waking moment.
Turn my head with thoughts of summertime.
Say you need me with you now and always.
Promise me that all you say is true.
That's all I ask of you.

Let me be your shelter, let me be your light.
You're safe, no-one will find you. Your fears are far behind you.

All I want is freedom, a world with no more night.
And you always beside me, to hold me and to hide me.

Then, say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime.
Let me lead you from your solitude.
Say you need me with you, here beside you.
Anywhere you go, let me go too.
Christine, that's all I ask of you.

Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime.
Say the word and I will follow you.
Share each day with me, each night each morning.
Say you love me . . .

You know I do . . .

Love me, that's all I ask of you.

Anywhere you go, let me go too!
Love me, that's all I ask of you . . .
