He was virtually under the street, in a storm drain - he could stand in there and completely conceal the rifle.
Escape was through exiting the drain pipe - big enough to crouch in. The drain pipe runs under the grassy knoll and exits in a ditch behind the fence.
Ballistics, forensics all point to this...
