Sen. Chuck Grassley is predicting that President Trump will get to nominate a second justice to the Supreme Court as early as this summer.

The Iowa Republican, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said there is a "rumored" upcoming retirement but declined to say which justice he expects to step down.

"I would expect a resignation this summer," Grassley said during a Q&A with the Muscatine Journal in Iowa.

Grassley added that the president's next Supreme Court nominee would likely come off the list of roughly two dozen names Trump announced before taking over the White House.

Trump could be able to make multiple nominations, allowing him to shape the direction of the court for decades. As chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Grassley would be responsible for shepherding the nomination through the Senate.

Two justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Anthony Kennedy, are in their 80s, and Justice Stephen Breyer is 78.

Time for another conservative on a majority vote. Elections have consequences, as Obama once lectured us, or was it twice?:D

Let's see, Ginsburg's the oldest (84), and Kennedy the next oldest (80). It's probably one of them if there's anything to this. Next next oldest are Breyer (78), Thomas (68), and Alito (67).

If there is anything to Grassley's prediction, I'm betting on Kennedy as the retiring justice. Ginsburg and Breyer aren't about to willingly give up their seats to a potential conservative when Trump might not be re-elected in four years. Also, Kennedy is the most longest tenured justice currently on the Court having served five years longer than Ginsburg.

You're right about that.

They'll have to carry Ginsburg out before she'd contemplate the remotest possibility of a second Trump nominee (not to mention that her supporters can and will do anything short of embalming her carcass and carrying it into the court to prevent that).

This is interesting

If nothing else Trump will be able to appoint a very conservative SCOTUS. Any Republican would have though. Along with it's troika in the WH, Congress and Senate the US is set to be a very conservative place for decades to come. The right is winning in the US make no mistake about it.

The only one that I have heard mentioning retirement is Justice Thomas.

Kennedy and Thomas want to retire, so Trump can appoint younger conservatives. God will take care of Grinchburger and Breyer.

Buzzy?

Why are you being so disrespectful?

Are you intimated by successful women?

Maybe if she has enough respect for the legal process to step down she wouldn't attract any disrespect, She falls asleep during public functions and her reasoning lately seems a bit disjointed. She is 84 years old for God's sake. She said she'd step down if Trump was elected so let her get on with it. Don't keep her around until she's mumbling and drooling on the bench like William O. Douglas and Thurgood Marshall.

Are you questioning her ability to do her job or simply pointing out a few bad habits?

Buzzy makes Trumps reelection guaranteed. She needs to die and be in Hell.

I question the credentials of any Justice who believes the American judiciary should use international law to decide constitutional issues. I question as well her ability to pay attention when she can't sit through the SOTU without falling asleep. She's on that court to bend the Constitution not uphold it and liberals are desperate to keep her there until death.

Has she done anything or said anything that would cause the House of Representatives to start impeachment proceedings?

That has nothing whatsoever to do with it. They didn't impeach Obama's demonstrable acts of treason either.
