Anybody know anything about Grappa?

I usually don't drink, in fact until last month I had not had anything alcoholic in over 20 years (I used to have a drinking problem; I would get drunk all the time). But while visiting in the Bay Area I went to some very nice restaurants and was treated to some wine (don't care much for it), and then after dinner we had some Grappa. One of the varieties I tried was a clear with a tint of purple and was called "Lavender", but I don't think it was made from those kind of flowers; from what I understand it is made from the flowers and stems of the grape. The other variety was made from berries and it just tasted like a very strong wine.

I liked the "Lavender" Expensive stuff though - $11 for a shot glass.

Good grief, that stuff is like drinking turpentine! I had a shot of that a couple of weeks ago in Florida ($14 a shot). It's liquid fire! Don't strike a match near your mouth after drinking it!

KABOOM!!!!

The only times I've had grappa were in Italy, and the only reason I drank it was because I didn't want to be rude to my hosts. I think grappa is great if you're already drunk and want to get really drunk. It's not as bad as Ouzo, though.

I like it, but I've only ever drank the unflavoured kind :)

Grappa fuck it is lethal - basicaly it is all the shit left over from the wine making process - you know the crap at the bottom of the barrel - distilled .

The Italians love it and have loads of diferent brands - had a drink the other night ( I bought a bottle in a moment of complete madness in Italy ) nearly finished me

Grappa should be drunk with extreme caution

True, never get to toasting with a bunch of guys who only drink one shot each, (bunch of wimps!)
but expect you to drink a shot to toast with everyone of them...

Ask and thou shall recieve....

What is Grappa?

First and foremost, grappa is a grape-based clear spirit of between 80 and 100 proof. It is made from the distillation of the pieces of grapes, stems and seeds often included, that were pressed for the winemaking process. The grappa distillation process was originally designed to make use of these “leftovers”, and has long since been commercialized into mass production and bottling. What’s so special about grappa is that this commercial availability hasn’t stopped the cottage grappa industry. In fact, most of the Italians I know with grapevines still distill their own in the Spring. That’s a testament to the strong traditions binding grappa with Italian society.

The taste of a good grappa is similar to that of vodka, crisp and intense with the flavors appearing mostly as finishing notes. Like a chameleon, grappa can assume any flavor, depending on the type and quality of the grape. A current trend is also to flavor the grappa by artificial means, usually with a flavored fruit syrup, to sweeten and soften the spirit so that American drinkers find it more palatable. Both traditional and new grappas have their place, and at least one of them deserves a space in your liquor cabinet.

Everyone there said this Grappa was good - they had some Grappa overseas and it sucked, but this was good tasting stuff. It did remind me of vodka a bit, and I could see how it would definitely be an acquired taste, but I preferred it to the wine.

I am just not a drinker anymore - I only ever drank to get drunk, and never liked the aftertaste of anything alcoholic except maybe liquers and hard liquor, and not really then. Give me plain old fruit or veggie juice without the liquor and I am happy. I like virgin bloody marys, etc..
