Government shutdown over illegals?

It's all about the politics. Trump ran on border security and deporting the illegals. Sooooo, if the democrats can force him to cave on that issue they'll have driven a wedge between Trump and his supporters.

So they're trying to turn a spending bill into a 'comprehensive immigration reform bill' and using the DACA crowd as the 'victims.' They don't care how much pain they inflict on the citizen in their quest for political power.

The DACA issue is a non-issue for all intents and purposes, and it certainly isn't any 'emergency.' DACA doesn't run out until Mar. 9th leaving ample time for negotiation. Given that Trump AND the republicans want to see the issue resolved even if negotiations run past that date congress can pass some sort of temporary protection bill that Trump would most likely sign if it weren't polluted with extraneous shit.

The resolution to this fiasco, the shutdown, is going to be all about messaging. The democrats have the press and Trump has the 'bully pulpit.'

Daca isn't a budgetary issue, so why is it even a consideration when it comes to funding the government? The United States Senate needs to change the rules and dump the 60 vote rule and go to a simple majority. We need to write these Democrats right out of the process. They lost the election and this is what they would do if they won the election.

"Sooooo, if the democrats can force him to cave on that issue they'll have driven a wedge between Trump and his supporters."

False and fantasy premise on the part of the Democrats. Nothing he does will drive a wedge in. Results matter and on this historic anniversary, the results are pleasing his base of support.

To me, not a supporter, but just as an observer, for years the Democrats have staked out outrageous positions and then watched as the Republicans offered a much more centrist, moderate position and then moved to the Democrat position, in the spirit of compromise, which is why we ended up with the Obama economy and the Obama immigration policies.
But now, the Democrats are faced with a new Presidential paradigm, a President who stakes out a strong position and who will gradually move to the center, only if the Democrats do too. Schumer doesn't understand this, he believes he can get the Republicans to fold, again, but I'm not so sure Trump will and not only that, he won't sit there and take it in the shorts with the quiet dignity of the Republican establishment (are you listening JEB!, Dubya?), but he is going to go on the offense, and so far, we have seen that he very adroit at that. For years the press has been able to frame the Republicans without opposition, but now Trump has figured out to go over the press' political contributions and talk directly to the people and to negatively frame those in opposition to his desired policies.

That's a sword that cuts both ways. When you're in power, you want to just act without opposition. But when you're out of power...
Remember the Senate was originally to be the representative of the states and to be a brake upon the passions of the mob. If you eliminate the 60-vote rule, then the mob controls both the House and senate and there is nothing to cool the passions of the day. Our greatest constitutional mistake was the 17th Amendment.

Regardless of how you feel, each and everyone of those democrats won their elections. As such they are answerable to their constituents, not the president.

I wish that were a true contention, but Claire has proven that she is more beholden to party than people.

That's her problem. Looking at the breakdown her seat is up for grabs right now. If she thinks this is her path to re-election, sobeit.

We may not have to like the way things are, but I can't think of a way of changing it without shit canning all the safe guards.

I think she is vulnerable. Outside of KC, StLouie and Columbia, there is a sense that Trump has done more for us than she ever did beginning with her lockstep support of Obamacare.

The senate has an elected Republican majority who are stymied from governing by a stupid Senate rule that has noting to do with the Constitution or the President. Republicans need to change the rules so the agenda of the majority of the states can be carried forth.

And will you still love majority rules when the Democrats control the Congress? Not too long ago, they were crowing about government never being Republican again and gleefully changing rules, changes which came back to bite them on the ass when the Republicans took control.

The reason for the 60 vote rule is based on the same reasoning behind the electoral college. It's what makes us a Republic, not a democracy.

If it were based on just a simple majority the laws of the land would be swinging wildly every election cycle. Chaos would reign supreme.

Remember well the last time they were in charge, Reid had no compunction about using the nuclear option. Elections have consequences. I have no problem with majority rule in the Senate and neither will the Democrats if they regain control. We have to learn how to win. Because every time we do we lose to the left's agenda...until now that is.

We better get smart. If the present crop of radical Democrats get control the 60 vote rule will be out the window anyway. There's a fight for America going on right now, it's a street fight, and we better understand it. You think all of that Obama lawlessness and weaponization of powerful government agencies against Trump and the American people was all about the Queensbury Rules or reverence for the Constitution?

I'm not one of we. I want to stay a Republic and not a winner takes all free for all like Venezuela.

What's cute is the quoting of the non-politican Trump sans the remarks of Chuck Schumer at the time, who was in office.

how do you feel about majority rule in presidential elections

everyone who was against a government shutdown are suddenly behind it.

Most conservatives already know it's been shut down 18 to 20 times in the past and we're all still here. This administration isn't going to weaponize the shutdown against the civil society like Obama did. the Parks will remain open the mail will be delivered the war memorials will remain open.
