Gotham's Gate was once known as the Crown Jewel of the Sword Coast on the continent of Faerun. It started as a simple fishing village owned by Lord Bartholomew Gotham and eventually grew to become the largest port city in the known world. For centuries it was hailed as the merchants' promised land, importing exotic goods from all corners of the globe. This lead the noble houses to great wealth and power over the rest of the Sword Coast.
Over successive generations, the Great Houses of Faerun all gained significant holdings in the city, which eventually caused corruption to worm its way into the streets. The tension between the families eventually led to the Kinslayer Wars, which saw House Gotham and all those who supported it burned to the ground. This paved the way for the remaining Houses to form the Court of Owls, emboldened by an army of mercenaries and assassins known as the Talons. They returned long-forbidden industries to the Sword Coast, such as slavery, prostitution, child labor, highly addictive herbal narcotics, forced marriages, etc.
In the decades since the Court seized power, Gotham's Gate has fallen into a grimy shadow of its former glory. Seething with crime, filth, and corruption. One brave family found the courage to stand up to the Court -- House Wainewick, which had branched off from House Gotham about two centuries prior. However, much like their distant cousins, the Wainewicks met a grim fate at the hands of the Talons. The only living heir was a young boy named Damian Wainewick, who had been smuggled out of the city in a merchant caravan by his parents just prior to their House's downfall.
Broken and wrought with despair, Damian wandered aimlessly, eventually finding himself in a distant land called Nanda Parbat. He was taken in by R'as al Ghul, the Demon's Head and leader of the League of Shadows. Trained in a mixture of rougish and stealthy tactics and dark magic, Damian became a Nightblade -- the perfect assassin.
It has now been fifteen years since the destruction of House Wainewick, and Damian has returned to Gotham's Gate to cast vengeance on those who betrayed his family and cast the Court of Owls down from their throne. The League of Shadows must maintain neutrality and had to banish Damian from their ranks before he could begin his assault. Thus, he is alone and requires aid in his mission. You are that aid.
Basically, rewrite DC/Marvel characters as if they were in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, essentially. The eventual over-arching plot of the RP will be the Court's attempt to collect the Infinity Stones to resurrect the Blackfire Dragon Lords -- Thanos, Trigon, Neron, Mephisto, and Savitar. We can have a lot of fun with this idea
