What's up with it?

Yes, I could google it, however I prefer to ask you freaks & geeks.

I found this particularly funny:

Incognito Mode in Google Chrome

When you want to browse the Internet in stealth mode, Google Chrome offers Incognito browsing. Pages you open and files you download while in Incognito mode aren’t recorded in Chrome’s browsing or download history, useful if you’re planning a surprise birthday present or party!

Google sells it as "unifying 30-odd, disparate policies into one, simple and overriding" one.

But anything that can access my browser history and give me ads based on what it finds, that gives me pause.

Umm, wtf?

Off the Record Gmail Chats

Don’t want Gmail chat conversations to be stored in your account? Choose to chat “off the record”. You and your Gmail friends can see when a chat is taken off the record, and you’ll be instantly notified if your friend decides to chat on the record again.

I never realized we were "on the record" on freakin Google chat.

That is very poorly worded.

If you search your inbox for someone's email address, any chat you've had with them comes up in the results, same as old emails.

Yeah, it makes me a bit queasy, too, but in the end, I enjoy what Google and all the internet titans offer, so I figure, fuck it.

Let'em have my info.

I'm never running for office :D

I am pretty sure Mike Yates has a thread on that already.
(kidding!)

If it were really private, you couldn't google it.

Are you referring to a privacy level that's set up on your gmail account by which you can opt out of appearing on Google searches - at least, your gmail address and profile?

Ah, ok. Right, I've seen that on Yahoo as well.

More than anything I was commenting about the wording. Calling chats "on the record" and "off the record" evokes courtroom drama.

Ha!

Sending spanks yer way

Yeah, like I told IM, I'm queasy about my internet history being mined, but I see it as inevitable. It's part of the consumerist society we live in and that's that.

When I log into Amazon, I always see a recommendation for a political book, a dildo and some camping gear. This is who I am to Amazon.

One ring to rule them all.

I was gmailing with a friend years ago about pizza. We both freaked when we realized all the Ads on the emails were for pizza after that exchange. That freaked us out, so we decided to email about pie. Sure enough, pie ads followed. That was when I realized that I have zero privacy anwyhere or anytime. I combat that now by ignoring ad rails. It is pretty easy to do so long as the layout doesn't change.

Pictures of my penis are on the internet. It's too late to worry about privacy.

No, I was making a dumb joke.

It does, but I'm not sure what else they could call it. "ephemeral" and "chiseled in stone" might work.

I think Yahoo frames it as whether you want to save your chat history or not. That's a bit more innocuous.

I think you're right. It's many years now since I've logged into Yahell, but I recall assuming they'd save automatically and being disappointed that they didn't.

Rules to live by so you can ignore all privacy policies.

1. Nothing you do online is totally private.
2. Your search engine and ISP know all. Never forget that.
3. All chats and emails are saved somewhere by someone.
4. Google not only has a picture of the front of your house but also of your house from space. From space. Google found you from fucking space. You're one of 7 billion people and Google has a picture of your house from space. Don't fuck with Google.

Speaking of which, you really need to clean your gutters out.
