When I'm taking some time out from writing to enjoy the works of someone else I ussually go to the Top Lists to find something.

I feel there are stories which haven't done well on the ratings but are excellent...much akin to movies like Sawshank --box office flop, but great!

Anyone interested in starting a group in which we submit good reads per categories that haven't made 4.5 or above but are indeed hot?

No solid ideas to offer yet...just looking for interest and if there is...going from there...

I'll bite. I'm not sure what you mean by "starting a group," but if you are seeking contributions on this thread, I would be happy to add some as I come across new reads.

My all-time favorite story on Lit, and the one I recommend to anyone who asks, is Chess Game, by urbanslut. This is a four chapter story in the Loving Wives category.

I'm not sure about "groups". I have my own thread on this Board, titled "Embarras de Richesse", where I comment on new releases I've liked, and another, titled "Disappointments", where I comment on good authors who've disappointed me with stories I thought less good than what they'd done before, and hopefully will do again.

My concern with "groups" is that we are all opinionated (except for a certain well-known professional author, critic and editor, who is not opinionated, merely always right). As with collectibles, one person's trash is another person's treasure. I hope your thread doesn't turn into a slanging match.

Honestly the top lists are a bit biased. They are full of chapter series that have high votes due to it being down to just their "fans" voting.

Also once an author has a lot of fav's who vote for him/her it can skew the voting. Lit voters are just like fans in any other category Stephen King could write something shitty but it will sell in the millions. So even if a story by a very popular author sucks it may still have solid 4.7+ going for it.

Like Estragon said about collectors people have such varying taste that it would be tough to do some type of "group"

I think you are missing the point. The OP is looking for hot stories that did not make the hot lists. The reasoning behind the effort is precisely because the hot lists are unreliable.

All the input is correct. I'm going to keep it simple. Just a thread called favorites....it will be self explanatory.

And I am agreeing and explaining why they are. Like the "top 40" or any other list, it is no longer based on talent but a popularity contest. Whenever people vote this will happen.

See look at Number's 1,6,18, and 20 They let anybody on these things

OK, here's one: Nigel Debonnaire's Nude on the Bering Sea, a takeoff on The Deadliest Catch. Underrated but extremely well-written.
