AOL is making it'snewest genration of AIM compatible with other instant messenger services.

Will the other IM producers follow suit?

As I understand this article, when the new AIM is released, AIM users will be able to comminucate with MSIM and others, but MSIM (or in my case, Prodigy IM) users will only be able to connect with AIM users or other users of the same service.

Is this good news, or bad? (There is mention of the new system being slower and more accessible to hackers.)

Well, it's about time. Now if we can just get mac's to be compatible with other PCs.... I hate that transition software.

The reason being...

There are several client products out there (four of which were recently reviewed by Ziff-Davis Net) which are allow simultaneous access to several different message services. Evidently SOL gave up changing their software every time, just to prevent the little guys from accessing their chat. 'Bout damn time, I say... Having to load 3 or 4 different clients just to talk to various of my friends who, for whatever reason, do not all use the same thing is just tedious.
