I like to watch documentaries and was thinking of Laurelle's "Good Reads" thread last night as I watched "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" about (then) 85 year-old Sushi Chef Jiro Ono.

Essentially abandoned at the age of 7, he struggled to survive and began to apprentice as a chef. His story is one of do one single thing, over and over, master your craft, take pride in it.

He is the oldest and has the smallest restaurant of anyone ever awarded Michelin's 3 stars.

Gore Vidal - United States of amnesia

Dirty wars

The square

Food inc.

The Power of Nightmares.

You won't see that on US TV, btw. But it's on Youtube.

20 Feet from Stardom wonderful documentary about background singers who's names you probably don't know, but have heard many times.

I Know That Voice about voice actors. Produced and directed by John DiMaggio, the voice of Bender and Jake the Dog

This is a good point I will add the "where" to mine as well. I really only watch Netflix.

I don't know if it's on Netflix - I got it through the library.

Another one

The Alpo Story. It's about Alpo Martinez, the man Cam'ron played in the movie Paid In Full. It's the truth behind why Alpo killed Rich Porter, and how he went to DC and got linked up with Wayne Perry. Him and Wayne Perry was responsible for a lot of murders in D.C, and then he snitched on Wayne. I don't like Alpo personally, because he turned into a snitch, but it's a pretty good documentary.

I saw the Docu in the OP. Very good.

The only reason I pay for Hulu is because of their documentary section. They have quite a few on food, the environment and the economy. Three of my favorite things.

Dirty Wars and Food Inc sound familiar.

I think I have seen something similar about studio musicians.

Not sure I have heard of that one.

The Godmother, Griselda Blanco Cocaine Cowboy.

Saw something on the subject. I did not realize how much of what we see as a revitalized Miami and all the newer high rises were so related to the cocaine trade. I thought it was the other way around, they had money and went to Miami because it was upscale. I didn't realize they made it that way with all that cash.

Ill look for it.

I selected it for the food and found a really compelling human interest story. His oldest son at 50 has been waiting decades to take over the family business.

Johnny previously posted about

Damnation

Excellent doc about how dams have affected the communities and water sources. Great scenery!

i love me some documentaries

this is the most recent i've been watching: Alaska: Earth's Frozen Kingdom.. it showed me there's way more going on in Alaska than i knew, and learning things feels so satisfactory. i did not, however, see thor interviewed :( In the first of three episodes, a mother sea otter leaves her baby floating whilst she gets food. it can't swim, but it can't sink because she's blown air into his fur, fluffing him up like a fuzzy little football :D

I really admire her. Being a woman in that kind of business; she handle herself well. She was ruthless; and I can respect that. I kinda wish that I was that black guy that she had got involved with. But I wouldn't had snitch on her. The part that got me is that they was 2 secs away from kidnapping John F Kennedy son. Just so they will let her out of jail. Is fucked up that she was murdered when she got deported. ( Jelly did I use the semicolon right? )

Ill look for it.

Ever seen Paid In Full?

The Godmother, Griselda Blanco Cocaine Cowboy.

"Cocaine Cowboys" was a pretty decent doco.
"The Art of War" which is a edited film of an interview with Robert McNamara is fascinating.
"The World at War" is an interesting way to spend a weekend, if one goes for WW2 documentaries.

"...did I use the semicolon right?"

No. Both times wrong. Should have used commas.

Cocaine Cowboys 2 was better than 1.
