I'm getting a new car, and we're shopping for insurance. We have MetLife right now, but we've never filed anything but a glass claim in 9 or 10 years and the policies are holding their prices even though our current vehicles are worth very little. I'm particularly interested in positive experiences with auto accident w/ injury claims and/or larger home claims.

Any good experiences or recommendations to share?

We've had good luck with Progressive, though I hate those Flo commercials. Three cars and our house, they've kept their rates competitive. Unfortunately, insurance seems to be one of those things where shopping around once a year seems to be a very good idea. Years and years ago, I had a really bad experience with Allstate, so I refuse to give them a second chance.

I happened upon a list of places that give discounts based on where I work. It's not really advertised. With my employee discount, my payroll deduction discount, etc - I saved 30% off of the originally quoted price with MetLife. It might be worth checking to see if your employer has any deals with anyone.

I've have had two policies for my entire adult life.

When I lived in Illinois I had The Hartford. When I moved to Texas I had to switch and went with GEICO.

The only problem is I have never had to make a claim even though I have on two occasions I have had accidents with my cars. They weren't my fault, so the claim was with the other parties insurance. In both cases the insurance company who paid me was State Farm. They were very prompt with the claim payment.

I'll check out Progressive. I've heard similar horror stories about Allstate.

I've had excellent service from GEICO as our auto and RV insurance provider over the past 16 or so years. Our homeowners is with USAA and that's been fine as well. GEICO's website is particularly good, in my opinion, in the sense of being user friendly and intuitive - and my favorite thing about them from a client service standpoint is how quickly we can get a real live human being on a phone call for info, answers or to resolve a problem if taking care of things in the website for our own account hits a roadblock. And, even better, when we've had claims on (trying to recall now....) about 3 occasions, we've gotten quick service and the GEICO claims adjuster was prompt, with authorization for repairs with a minimum of hassle. Very positive experience for us. But I know situations vary a lot. Hope that helps.
GEICO is what my hubby's company uses, although that's because it's the only company that would even entertain insuring the owner (who has a spectacularly bad record).

My mother-in-law is checking into USAA for us. I know it's great insurance for those who qualify!

Have any of your claims involved an injury accident?

No discounts through my husband's employer (it's a small business), BUT I do get a discount w/ MetLife through the National PTA. I'll have to get a quote for my new car and the vehicle we're keeping, and see if it pays to stay with MetLife.

I'm looking at State Farm; the rates seem pretty competitive.

A no-fault or at-fault injury accident is where the "rubber meets the road" on auto insurance, in my experience. Most companies do well repairing vehicles, but when the real damage is whiplash/soft-tissue/less obvious than a broken bone, major problems can ensue!
