"Jared i don't understand why i can't go with you" Tatiana pleaded desperately with her brother. "You can't leave me here with them, you know father is trying to pawn me off to whichever pompous ass will pay him the most or give him the largest amount of land. I will not be sold like a cow."

He always had a hard time denying his sister, but this mission was something he had to keep to himself. Its not that he didn't trust his sister to hold his secrets, it was simply she was a terrible liar. "tati, do as i ask, be the princess i know you to be, he'll do nothing without telling me first. He wouldn't risk my wrath. All i'll do is what i have in the past, just tell him he could get more. That will put him off for a while."

Her brother was her whole world. He was the one that wiped her tears, that taught her things of the world. Without him she would be lost, or sold off to the highest bidder. He'd protected her since she was born 19 years before. It was rare that he would leave her behind, and it frustrated her even more so when he clammed up.

"Well at least promise me you'll come home soon." she begged.
"of course princess" he said affectionately to her as he rode off on his black steed. She waited until he was no longer in sight before heading to the stables. Retrieving the clothes of his she had stashed. behind the stack of hay.
sliding them on over her tiny waist. she undid her dress and stashed it. Placing on his shirt over her corset. Pining her long golden locks upon her head she placed a hat on. From the back she might pass as a boy, but definitely not from the front. Even if she bound her breasts they would still be apparent. Her face was far to pretty for that of a boy, flawless skin and crystal blue eyes.

She snuck out past the stables staying out of sight. Sticking two fingers in her mouth she let out a whistle, from across the field came a chestnut stallion called Valiant. He let out a loud neigh as he raced to her, he was hers and only hers. Not even her brother could ride him. They left him out in the meadow because of his aggressive nature toward people.

Grabbing his mane she flipped herself upon his back and whispered go, as she clung with her thighs and held on to his mane. He reared up and took off hoping over the fence with little effort. Cutting through the forest was highly frowned upon from her brother. So she did it whenever he displeased her.

Jared took the long way around to the kingdom of Prince Tuadreck Ivardion's. He had met the prince when he was out hunting a few years before. They always managed to over look the Kingdom politics between their fathers. The prince closest thing to a brother he had.

Tuadreck Ivardion, firstborn prince of Lumanor inspected his map as he guided his horse, Ronan, along the path in the valley that split the mountain range that marked the border between the kingdom of Valoria and his own. Behind him were 2 of his most trusted soldiers, Arrok and Sirain, they followed in a straight line their eyes alert as always. Tuadreck checked his weaponry and armour, he did not expect to be getting into a fight but it always paid to be prepared. He wore a padded armour with a chainmail shirt draped over and a long sword hung at his waist. Rolling up his map and stowing it in his saddlebag he rode into the forest that blanketed the valley along a path that led to a clearing. He signaled to stop just before the entrance to the clearing and dismounted, his two companions followed suit. He spoke, his voice a low vibration, deep and commanding.

“Arrok, Sirain, keep this area well guarded, only alert me if anyone comes too close, and make sure you do so quietly.”

Tuadreck, or Tu as his mother Lanaris was wont to call him, was the one and only crown prince of Lumanor. So it was no surprise that when he joined the king’s army his parents were less than pleased. To both their delight and dismay Tuadreck turned into a skilled fighter and formidable leader and tactician, this was mostly due to the training of the kingdoms commander general Verithas. As he said when he was handed the job of training the prince ‘No matter rank or race your blood will always bleed red, so when you fight forget about being a prince and focus on keeping the blood inside not out.’ He had quickly risen to the rank of Captain and was given command, when possible, of the 5th company of the King’s army. Otherwise the day to day monotony of the royal court and the denizens therein occupied his time.

He walked up towards a man about his age that stood next to the small pool taking up most of the area, the trees grew close together around the area save for the one small area with which it could be entered. So far this place was only known to himself and Jared, the man Tuadreck greeted with a smile.

“Jared my friend, long has it been since I saw you last!”

Jared, crown prince of Valoria smiled as he was gathered up in a fierce hug by his long time friend. Tuadreck invited him to sit and pulled some bread and wine from his satchel. Jared had been a brother in all but blood since they had stumbled across each other hunting when they were younger. Now at the age of 25 they had known each other for 4 years now, usually they met out in the open but tensions were high between their kingdoms so secrecy was a necessity at this moment.

“Tell me how do you and your kingdom fare? I have been busy of late with these tedious goings on that My mother and father insist I must attend to. As you know traditions must be adhered to at all times.”

He chuckled as he handed some bread and wine to his friend. It was always good to see him an escape for a moment the troubles that plagued both their kingdoms.

Jared laughed with his friend and took the wine and cheese. "All fairs the same in Valora i'm afraid" he replied with a half smirk. "My father has failed once again to honor an alliance with the marriage of Tatiana. It seems he got another offer that was more fruitful." Jared rolled his eyes. "I don't know what else i can do to sway my father that he's making more enemies like this. The more deals he breaks the less chance of getting an alliance for when we need it."

Jared scoffed and took a bite of his bread. "It wouldn't be so bad if Tatiana wasn't so against it. I can't say that I blame her. I wouldn't wish to be traded like a side of beef either. But she hasn't any prospects for a future other then marriage, mind you she can fight like a man, and is as well read as anyone I've met. It's an accomplishment but not one her suitors are seeking i'm afraid." He laughed again as he thought of the last man she scared away.

"So when are you going to take a wife my friend?" he asked with a note of humor.

Tatiana slowed Valiant to a walk and eventually dismounted leaving him to pick at some grass as she crept closer. She could make out figures in the distance. But because of the guards she couldn't get to close. She knew that one was her brother and the other she wasn't sure of. What was he up to she wondered before having to retreat because a guard was getting closer. With stealth and grace she withdrew from the forest with Valiant and went to visit some of the farmers that occupied her fathers land.

Tuadreck stroked his chin as he listened to Jared’s lamentations in regard to his father trying to marry off his sister to secure an alliance. He mused as he listened, usually marriages of state tended to be straight forward affairs, he was intrigued as to why it continued to fail. He had only met King Darius once during a meeting of their two countries monarchs many years before, he remembered him to be kind but sly, prone to being overconfident. They had brought a small girl with them who he later found out was Jared’s sister Tatiana, he had been 16 at the time and in the beginnings of his combat training.

He remembered her as a strong willed little girl of 11 who rarely did anything she was asked to, he doubted she would remember him as they had never spoken to one another. Jared, like Tuadreck, been busy with training at the time and had not attended. As Jared spoke of her prowess in combat he chuckled, he was not surprised, that amount of fire could not be contained. He laughed as Jared enquired as to whether he had found a wife.

“No my friend, my mother and father have thrown countless ladies of the court to woo me but they are brought up in the pomp and privilege of high born houses and find my blunt warrior like disposition to be uncouth.”

He laughed again as Jared smiled and teased him about his distaste for royal goings on.

“I have been raised as a prince, I know the rituals and traditions of my status, but my heart is truly in my sword. These women have no such understanding of my love for my blade”

He sat in deep thought as what Jared had said to him ran through his mind.

“You know my friend, I hope one day I will meet your sister properly, she sounds like quite the woman. Of course we will meet while being watched over by her brother’s keen eye of course.” He teased him in return.

He ate as he talked, watching his reflection in the pool. Tuadreck stood 6 foot 3 with long black hair which was half tied up with the rest flowing just past his shoulders. His eyes were a light amber colour sitting either side of his averagely sized nose. He fingered the scar on his cheek, a reminder to keep his guard up at all times. He had broad shoulders and an averagely sized body while his skin was tanned to an olive colour from the sun. He turned to Jared.

“You said these alliance's continue to crumble, exactly why do these betrothals fail?”

Jared enjoyed conversation with his old friend as they sat and talked without the hindrance of ears and proper etiquette. "the betrothals?" Jared questioned and then continued. "They fail for one of two reasons either my father gets a better offer before they come to court my sister, or my sister berates, disgusts, or convinces them she is not a princess their kingdom would benefit from." Jared let out a laugh. "You've heard King Slaydac of Cambria?, he's rumored to be one of the richest most sought after bachelors in the ten kingdoms. He wanted to marry Tatiana so badly he offered my father 1000 acres of his land and all the tenants that belonged to it.

Tatiana agreed to a walk in the gardens with him. By the end of the walk he couldn't leave fast enough, calling off the whole arrangement and withdrawing any and all intentions toward my sister. He looked like he'd seen a ghost. Still to this day she won't tell me what she did or said. But i can tell that she's very amused by it."

Jared just shook his head "When I am King my friend, my sister will still be torturing suitors and happily unattached. She is a clever young lady, and is my best friend. I can't say that there is a man worthy of her affection. I truly don't have to worry about her being treated poorly because she won't give anyone the chance." he laughed again and drank some more wine.

Becoming serious for a moment he looked to his friend. "I have a favor to ask of you" Jared pulled a sealed parchment from his coat addressed to Tatiana. "if something should happen to me, I need you to promise to get her out of the castle and take care of her for me. She's not safe without me there to stand between my father and her. I don't wish to burden you with the details. But this letter will ensure that she goes with you without much resistance. Will you do this for me?" he asked handing him the letter.

Tuadreck could not help but laugh heartily as Jared regaled him with tales of his sister and her suitor’s repeated failed attempts to woo her. He wiped a tear from his eye as he took the wine back from jared and took a swig from his wine then seeing Jared’s face turn to a more serious note he he calmed slightly. He watched as Jared took out an envelope and asked him to ensure the safety of her sister if he should fall. Tu’s face turned solemn and he put away the food before standing, Jared followed suit.

“My friend, it would be an honour to act in your stead. I give you my word as your brother in all but blood, If something I shall make sure she is kept safe.”

He held out his hand and Jared handed him the letter, stowing it safely he held out his hand. The clasped each other at the wrist and nodded to each other as they bid farewell.

“Be wary my friend, until next we meet.”

They walked to the entrance to the clearing, Tuadreck nodded to his companions and they mounted their horses, nodding to Jared he urged Ronan back to his home in Lumanor. The ride took the best part of the afternoon and the sun was starting to set when they arrived at the gates of Valmonte, the capital city of the kingdom. They drew their hoods as they moved through the streets towards the palace, not wishing to draw attention to themselves. They drew up at the gates that sat at the entrance to the palace gardens. The guards bristled as they approached but Tuadreck pulled his hood back.

“Be calm my friends, tis only I.”

The guards nodded and opened the gate, Tu and his friends rode through.

“Sirain, go and seek a messenger to advise my parents of my arriving. Arrok, take my sword and return it to the armoury.”

The sword he carried was not his own but one he had taken form the armoury, he didn’t tend to take his sword with him on such outings to meet friends. Arrok and Sirain did as the asked as Tuadreck gave Ronan over to the stablemaster. He made his way to the baths washing himself before putting his royal attire on and strapping his dagger to his waist and putting the envelope he had been given safely in a pocket next to his breast underneath his tabard. He then made his way to the throne room to greet his parents: King Bolveck and Queen Lanaris of Lumanor, he kneeled before them in a formal greeting.

“Mother, Father, I have returned, what news is there since my departure.”

Jared arrived back at the stables just as Tatiana emerged from them wearing her dress. "you've been out again and probably wearing britches haven't you?" he asked with a half smirk.

"Oh don't ask what you don't wish to know brother" she replied with a smirk of her own. "I went to the villages to check on the farmers. You didn't actually expect me to stay in the house did you? You know i would have just gotten into another fight with father over his idiotic attempts to pawn me off."

"I worry about you Tati, one day you won't beable to scare someone off and be forced to marry against your will. You should pick a kind one while you can. You can train him after your married." he let out a laugh

"It is bad enough i'm in the cage as a woman, I won't be pawned off to be someone elses puppet. You know I am set against it. I will never marry Jared, there is too much unknown about the world to limit myself in the binds of matrimony and to be bred bearing one heir after another. One day you'll be king, and i won't have to worry about it. "

"I hope it works out that way" he said solemnly. "who were you meeting in the woods?"she asked changing the subject.
"You little sneak" he declared "You went through the woods didn't you, damn it Tati."
"Yes i know you've told me not to. But don't change the subject, who were you meeting?"
Holding up his pinky she wrapped hers with him indicating it was a secret to remain between them.
"I've stayed close friends with Tuadreck Prince of Lumanor, that is who i met."
"Father would be furious" she declared rather impressed at her brothers secretive friendship.
"Yes i know which is why no one was to know." he said rather sternly.
"You know i won't tell a soul. It is good to know that you have a disobedient streak as well though." she smirked again taking her brothers arm as they walked back to the palace.

As they entered they were informed their presence was requested in the throne room. They went to meet their father as he paced back and forth. Glaring to them as they entered. Taking his seat back upon his throne he began to speak.

"Tatiana I have had enough of your antics you will marry who i say when i say and that is the end of this conversation."

Tatiana looked up at him and stated simply "No". Turning around she walked out leaving her father screaming at her at the top of his lungs.

"Seize her" her father yelled at his guards which went after her. A few minutes later two rather discombobulated guards dragged her back in the room with a great deal of effort.

Leaving his throne he lunged forward seizing her by the throat. "You will obey"

A cling of metal was heard as Jared drew his sword "Release her" he commanded at his father. Who was shocked that his son would challenge him. Releasing Tatiana's throat he drew his sword out in return slapping his sons excepting the challenge. "You think you're a man, challenging your King?" he yelled to Jared. "A King should be respected not feared. You are nothing more than a thief and a bully. You have installed fear and placed injustice upon your people, you have failed them and your family as an honorable man. You are not a King sir, you are a tyrant and your rule ends today."

The clash of metal began as father and son clanged there swords. Tatiana watched in horror as her brother went up against their father and became mortally wounded. Breaking free of the guard she ran to her brother and held him. "Find the secret" he strained to whisper with his last breath.

Tuadreck stayed kneeling as his Mother smiled and his Father signalled him to rise.

“Come my son, take your place at my side, we have some last issues to attend to before we advise you of the day’s goings on.”

Tuadreck sat in his chair at his father’s side. King Bolveck was an aging 50 year old man with graying brown here. His brows always seem to be furrowed in concentration and rarely would he smile, it was a shame as his smile would could light up a room. Lanaris his mother still had most of her light brown hair and her warm smile never failed to lighten Tuadreck’s mood or soften his father’s. The usual to and fro of the court came to an end and they stood bowing as their attendants and advisors filed out. Lanaris smiled and embraced her son.

“Tu my son, it is such a joy to have you back, our home is never the same when you are gone. Isn’t that right my love?” She eyed her husband.

Bolveck nodded and embraced his son “There has not been much to speak of since your departure, a few matters of state here and there.” They talked as they made their way to the dinner hall. “Your mother has enquired once again whether you met anyone in your travels.”

Tuadreck feigned ignorance “Why whatever do you mean father.”

Bolveck sighed as the sat at the table and their servants brought the food out. “You know exactly what we mean my son.”

Lanaris chimed in, a slightly stern look on your face. “You will need a woman by your side, it is important to maintain balance in a kingdom, and a king cannot rule without a strong queen at his side.” Bolveck grunted in agreement as he ate.

“I will marry when there is a woman who doesn’t find my demeanour ‘more comparable to to a bear than a prince.’ these ladies of the court wish me prance about in ridiculous attire in front of them before even entertaining the notion of being woo’d.”

Lanaris sighed as she sipped her broth. “You cannot continue to be so picky in your decisions for long Tu, soon love will have no part in it and duty will be the only thing driving your search for a bride.”

Tuadreck tore into his food as he mulled the thought over and he suddenly thought of Jared’s sister Tatiana. “Mother, what do you know of the princess of Velloria?”

Lanaris was about to speak when Bolveck scoffed “Darius’ welp? he tried offering her betrothal to you at the beginning of this year. I wasn’t having any of it, she’s spurned enough suitors to fill a village.”

Lanaris gave her husband a withering look and turned to address her son “She and her father visited many years ago when you were young, they say she could frighten a bear away and is the equal there is no woman and few men similarly skilled in combat, the say she has a full mouth with the beauty and grace of a goddess.” She smiled lightly “These however are only rumors, and rumors should never be trusted while the truth is not in sight.”

Tuadreck nodded and was about to speak but was interrupted by a servant carrying a message. The messenger handed it to Bolveck who’s usually stoic face suddenly became one of surprise and shock, he thanked the messenger. When he spoke his voice was low and solemn.

“Lanaris, my son, the information which I have been handed is one of utmost secrecy and, as I understand, has only been made known to those few kingdoms who have contacts within the Vellorian capital.”

At the mention of Jared’s kingdom his ears perked up and he listened with full attentiveness.

“King Darius has slain his son Jared in single combat, furthermore our contacts in the palace have advised us he died trying to defend his sister as Darius has ordered she be kept under lock and key in her room till a suitor is found for her to wed.”

Tuadreck’s heart sank and a cold rage fill his being, one of his closest friends, murdered at his father’s hand. Suddenly he remembered his promise and the letter. He stood and bid his farewells before making his way to his room, he gritted his teeth as he silently mourned the passing of his friend then steeled himself for the task ahead. Once his parents had bid him goodnight and turned in he silently crept through the keep to the training yard. There Arrok and Sirain awaited him. Arrok was a large broad chested man who stood 4 inches taller than Tuadreck and wore only chainmail armour, a shield and hammer adorned his back. Sirain stood shorter and wore only a short sword at his waist with a bow sling across his chest, he was thin and lithe and rarely heard or seen. Tuadreck trusted these two men with his life.

They helped him into his armour; this time Tu donned his chain mail but also strapped plated greaves and braces to his legs and wrist. Light pauldrons were fixed to his shoulders and Arrok presented his sword. What was commonly known as a bastard sword it had been forged by the city’s master smith on the day of his birth and was his final work before he retired. The hilt and guards were forged from iron and inlaid with intricate carvings while the pommel had been fashioned into the shape of a dragon’s head with glowing emerald eyes. His men had named it Sentinel after Tuadreck’s legendary patience and ability to weather the most vile of insults without being angered. Once the preparations had been made he addressed his companions.

“Tonight a brother has fallen, we go to fulfill his last wish before his breath was unjustly stolen from him. Will you stand with me?”

“We are at your side always.” Sirain murmured.

“Can’t have the prince dying an early death now can we.” Arrok chuckled as they mounted.

Tuadreck allowed himself a smile at his friends efforts to lighten the mood then mounted Ronan and kicked him into a gallop as they sped off into the night.

Tatianas rage surged through her veins as she reached for Jareds sword. Tears stained her cheeks as she lunged toward her father landing the sword across his face. Before she could continue her assault she was grabbed by the guards who struggled to keep hold. "Take her to the dungeon, till i can find someone that will take her." The king hissed. "I will kill you if its the last thing i do" Tatiana vowed hissing the words to him as her eyes and nostrils flared with hatred and anguish.

She was tossed into a dreary cell as the iron gate closed and was locked behind her. Emotions of anger and loss filled her as the tears streamed from her eyes. Hours passed before her senses came back to her. Pulling the hair comb from her locks she set the long golden locks free and went to the gate where she worked with diligence to pick the lock.

More hours passed as she worked on it. Having to stop as the guards descended the cement stairs to bring her bread and water. "let me free" she said lightly "and i will ensure that your post is secure when i take this kingdom."

"I'm sorry princess" the guard said torn for a moment. "My loyalty has to remain with the king."

"When i kill the king what will your loyalty have been worth Leutenant Archibold? Are you surprised that I know your name? I bet my father doesn't, just like he doesn't know the name of any of his tenants. Because he doesn't care for his people or his servants. Let me free, so that i can restore the glory to this kingdom."

"But you are a woman, they will never let you rule" he replied with confusion over what to do.

"I will find a way, i always do" she replied.

Commotion interrupted them from above as the clank of swords and shouting could be heard. Archibold drew his sword and made his way up to investigate the disturbance.

Growling Tatiana went back to try to pick the lock and gain her freedom.

It was past midnight by the time Tuadreck had reached Kandos, the Capital of Velloria, they had ridden through a low pass between the mountains at a gallop, resting once to feed and water the horses. Once they reached the capital they drew up to the open door at the side of the closed gate and greeted the guard.

“Halt! The hour you have chosen to enter the city is late, state your business in Kandos.” The guard said confidently, his eyes glancing over the three armed men with suspicion. Tuadreck sighed, he hopped down from Ronan while Arrok and Sirain followed suit.

“Good sir, we are but weary mercenaries from Lumanor come to find some work. It is late and we seek only to lay our heads on a freshly made bed, come friend, surely you understand?.”

As Tu spoke he tapped the pouch hanging at his side, it jingled invitingly.

The guard looked thoughtful then shrugged and held his hand out, Tu dropped two gold coins in his hand, the guard grinned.

“Why of course kind sirs, please be welcome and rest your tired heads at our fine selection of inns.”

They were waved through and began to weave their way through the city, they found an inn in the upper part of the city near the palace and left their horses there for the night to rest while they secured a room and made their way towards the palace. This was where things would going to get interesting. Tuadreck would have to reveal himself to try and gain entry to the palace, coming under the pretense of wanting to negotiate with the king without his parents knowledge. The wily King Darius would hopefully take this as an opportunity to gain a foothold on Lumanor while Tuadreck only hoped to get close enough to Tatiana to deliver the letter and spirit her to safety. Arriving at the Palace they were greeted by to helmed guards with short spears and swords at their side.

“Halt, no one is permitted into the palace past evening.” Their tone was stern, not the kind of guards would be bribed.

Tuadreck walked up and threw back his hood then took the leather pouch covering the pommel of his sword. The signet ring on his left middle finger glowed In the moonlight and the guard's eyes widened and they bristled. Tuadreck held up his hand, as Arrok’s hand flew to his hammer and Sirain to his bow.

“Wait!, I have not come to fight.” He held his hands up palms open. “I have come to talk to King Darius on my father’s behalf.”

The guards looked wary but nodded and signalled the gate to be opened. AS the went through the courtyard and into the throne room it was all Tuadreck could do to keep his rage in check as he noted the hastily cleaned patch of floor and the blood spots here and there. King Darius himself looked slightly calm but the madness in his eyes betrayed his lust for power, he looked like he’d hardly slept. Tuadreck kept his eyes on him as he entered and began the long walk to the throne room, he whispered low to Arrok and Sirain.

“Try not to kill anyone, Arrok, when I give the signal head straight for the doors and bar them. Sirain, stay at my side in case Darius decides he has no time for words.”

Tu headed towards the dias where Darius sat, two empty seats. He clenched his fists as he forced a smile. And made a note of the guards in the room, not many, they must have expended some guards trying to subdue the princess.

“King Darius! An honour it is to meet you, I as you may know am Prince Tuadreck Ivardion of Lumanor, I have much to discuss, perhaps we could talk in private?”

King Darius laughed coldly “Do you think me some kind of fool? you would have me to yourself so you may assassinate me? no no no, Bolveck has obviously sent his only son and heir to me so that he might usurp my rule and my kingdom!! GUARDS! SEIZE THEM!”

Tuadreck swore, it seemed force was the only option “NOW!!” He bellowed.

Arrok took off towards the door drawing his hammer as he went, the guards in the throne room went rushing to meet him and were thrown to the ground while other not so lucky ones bore the brunt of Arroks hammer. One guard came running through a side door in the throne room, his sword drawn, he and Arrok began to trade blows. Realising where Arrok was headed some of the guards who had gone for Tu and Sirain went running after Arrok to stop him while the other few circled the two with spears. Tuadreck counted 5, then rested his hand on his sword, locking eyes with the King Darius.

“Darius, your son was one of my closest friends, he should not have died, not like this, at the hand of his own father.”

The guards suddenly seemed slightly unsure of themselves. Darius’ face turned red with rage.

“My son got what he deserved! He should have never defied me! Kill them!”

The guards hesitated but were suddenly interrupted by the sound of the door being barred and the clang as Arrok advanced grinning, banging his hammer on his shield . The guards who had rushed him lay groaning in pain as the ones surrounding Tuadreck and Sirain looked braced themselves, turning towards the oncoming threat. Tuadreck continued to keep his gaze firmly on Darius whose face was red with rage.

“Darius!!! I demand you answer for your crimes! you have slain your son and heir in cold blood yet you show no remorse and continue as if he has not existed. Your daughters sits in a cell awaiting to be sold to the highest bidder like some kind of slave, I will not let this injustice stand.”

The hissing sound of metal joined the clanging of Arrok’s hammer as Tuadreck drew his sword and held it upright as Arrok charged into the circle of guards, scattering them enough for Sirain to slip free and draw his bow. Darius was livid.

“My son should have never interfered, he has payed the price for his betrayal. As for my daughter, she WILL be married!”

Sirain and Arrok knocked out the last of the guards then watched as Darius strode from his throne and drew his sword, he swung and Tuadreck knocked the blow aside. He spun and used the momentum from the parry to carry the swing through and strike at Darius shoulders. He ducked under the strike just in time and they begun to trade blows in earnest. Back and forth they fought and while Darius had more experience Tuadreck’s skills were strengthened by his young and his time in battle. Finally he saw his chance and struck from above knocking Darius’ sword from his hands, it went skittering across the floor. Tuadreck held his Sword at Darius neck.

“Your majesty, I do not wish to shed your blood as much as I wish to avenge your son’s death. This is not the time or place, I have only one request. You say you wish your daughter to marry, I will make you this offer. Let her go free and cease your warmongering, in return I offer myself as her suitor in the promise that in 5 days she will continue to wish to stay at my side.”

Darius eyes widened when Tuadreck finished speaking but his attention was not on him but at Tatiana who had appeared at the door behind them.

Tatiana finally got her cell door open and exited through a tunnel which led to the main hall. She could hear yelling in the throne room and the clashing of metal. Picking up one of the fallen guards swords she stood in the door way of the throne room staring at her father as he stood with a sword to his throat.

Her eyes blazed as she assessed the situation. "I am Princess Tatiana, this is my kingdom now kill him or I will. Any quams you have with this kingdom we can discuss after this criminal is executed for the murder of my brother and the injustice he has piled upon the people of this kingdom."

She walked toward them with a fierceness as her hair and dress sailed behind her like a golden wave.

Standing beside Tu she placed her sword up at her fathers throat. "King Darius you have been accused of being a savage, a coward, a murderer, a tyrant and a poor excuse for a man how do you plead?"

"You have no right to stand in judgement of me, I am King and you will obey me" He hissed at her. "I never have and I never will" she replied coolly.

The rest of the guards began to assemble at the entrance. Tatiana turned to them "drop to your knees and except me as your new ruler, either way the King dies."

Lieutenant Archibald stepped in and got down on one knee. "At your service" he announced. Others began to follow suit until the assembly of her guards pledged their service.

"Pick up your sword" she ordered him. He stepped back from the swords at his throat and retrieved his sword lunging at her. With a quick step to the side she avoided him and gave him a slash across his ass. Turning quickly he struck at her again and she blocked it with her sword. She toyed with him until he was fighting with pure rage. Her demur remained less emotional then she was when she had sliced his face earlier. She drew out the fight taunting him as he hissed at her.

"Tell me father, is it that i'm a girl and about to end your life that bothers you, or that your men pledged their loyalty to me instead of you?"

"The kingdoms will never let a woman rule you foolish girl" he hissed as he lunged at her and she swiped the sword out of his hand kicking him in the stomach so he fell on his ass."

"Then i will just have to find a husband father. That is what you wanted isn't it? Except it will be on my terms." With that she plunged the sword into his gut with a fatal wound and twisted the blade so he would feel it rip through him. Wiping the blade off on him she stepped up an sat on his throne while her father watched dying.

"Now gentlemen, what do i owe the honor of your visit at this late hour?"

Tuadreck watch then stepped back as Tatiana confronted her father, if Jared and his parents assumption of her was correct she would face off with her father and probably beat him with ease. It seemed they had not been exaggerating, Tatiana was truly a wonder to behold in combat. She exuded grace and power and Tuadreck found himself drawn inextricably towards her fierce strength. As she dealt the final blow Tuadreck watched as she walked and sat on the throne as the last breath left the lips of the dying king. Tu walked and knelt next to the dying king as Tatiana questioned their presence.

"Now gentlemen, what do i owe the honor of your visit at this late hour?"

Tu looked up at the princess, his amber eyes locking onto hers as he stood and rested Sentinel’s tip on the floor of the throne room, his hands resting on the dragon head pommel. Arrok and Sirain put away their weapons and knelt either side of Tuadreck.

“Your Highness, we have met in the past but I believe you were much younger.” he lifted his sword and sheathed it keeping his eyes on hers.. “I am Tuadreck Ivardion, the one and only crown prince of Lumanor and captain of the 5th company of the Lumanorian army. Your brother is…..was my closest friend and confidant, his last request was to that if anything happen to you I would ensure to your safety no matter what. He also requested that I give you a certain item in case I needed to take your from the castle and keep you safe but it seems you have everything under control here, so there is no need for it whatever it is. I have chosen not to read it as it seems to be something reserved for yourself and your brother.”

He glanced down at the body of King Darius

“Though he was a tyrant and a murderer this man was still your father, how we treat the living reflects our true selves but how we treat the dead reflects our souls.”

He knelt and picked up the body of the king.

“If you do not wish to see him buried I will ensure he is buried elsewhere. Though I also hungered to avenge the death of he who was my brother in all but blood the deed is now done.”

He bowed his head reverently.

"Leave him lie, the guards will take him and bury him on unconsecrated ground as common criminal. Whatever love i had for this man died when he took the life of my brother." She said rather solemnly.

"Prince Tuadreck of Lumanor, you and your men are welcome in my kingdom. My brother spoke to me of you this very day when he returned." she smiled softly remember how she cornered him and made him tell her where he'd been. "I know that he held you in the highest regard and so i shall make it my mission to do the same if you will allow me. If your men wish it they may have food and drink before being shown their chambers. It is my wish that you stay the night as the hours are late. If i may i wish to have a few private words with you."

She waved her hand and her soilders rose and disbersed back to their posts. Leutenant Archibold stayed behind and led Tu's men to the mess hall. Once they were alone she spoke again.

"I would like the parcel that you brought on behalf of my brother" Taking the letter from her brother she ran her fingers over her name on the front before flipping it over and prying the seal carefully from the parchment.

"Dear Tati,
If you are reading this then I am no longer with you. For that I am sorry. It was not my intention to leave you, but my death is more then likely at the hand of our father. I know you well enough not to ask you to not take revenge for my death.

My friend Tuadreck Prince of Lumanor will be bringing you this letter. He has been my closest confidant for many years. I trust him with the most precious thing on earth which is you. Please go with him, and allow him to keep you safe from our father.

You can trust him Tati, he would make a good match for you if you were to choose to marry. Not because of what he is, but because of who he is. You two are very similar. Perhaps that is why him and I are such good friends. I ask that you take his advice under consideration and do not make a nuisance of yourself. Remember he brought this to you for me and with no other agenda.

If you have slain our father, which knowing you that is a great possibility. It will probably be your intention to rule the lands. As capable as you are of doing so, we live in a time that will not accept a woman ruler. You will need to find a husband. It is my last wish that you marry Tuadreck, if he will have you. I ask that you allow him to read this so he may know of my wish.

Be happy in your life Tati, I will always love you.
Jared

Tatiana wiped the silent tears from her cheek and handed Tuadreck the letter. "He asked that you read this" she said softly.

Tuadreck watched with interest as she read the letter silently, tears forming in her eyes. Once she had finished she handed it to Tu assuring him Jared had meant for him to read it also. He took it from her, his eyes scanning over the words before a tear rolled down his cheek. Closing it he addressed Tatiana.

“It seems you have a choice to make you highness. Your brother always spoke highly of you during our time together and I must say I have been intrigued by the picture he has painted of you, I see now it does not do you justice.”

His hand resting on the pommel of his sword he moved towards her and placed his hand on her shoulder.

“Your brother is correct, the nobles and highborn of this court will not accept you as their ruler without a husband. You may have the loyalty of the guards and perhaps some of the army but you will need to forge new alliances to ensure your rule is uncontested. Your father’s supporters are still at large and a show of force will only convince the populace you are much like your father. I offer you the hospitality of my home in Valmonte, if I announce my intent to be your suitor and you accept it will place pressure on your enemies. They will have no way of contesting your rule should you show your interest in marriage, other than your death of course. Come to Valmonte, there you shall be kept safe under the pretense of my affection for you which…”

He paused her, his amber eyes turning soft.

“It would be a lie to say that I do not feel I have some duty to look after you.” He waved his hand dismissively “But these are words for another time and place, tell me Tatiana, what will your choice be?”

She listened intently as he spoke. Her first response was to say no that she would do it on her own. But she couldn't dismiss her brothers words and wishes. There was more to consider then that. His kingdom was strong and combined with hers would be a force to be reckoned with. For her people it would be a new life and a better living.

"I have a few conditions before i agree." she said with strength in her tone. "This union between us is in name only. You will allow me to rule my kingdom and act as only a proxy. There will be no conjugal rights, i will not submit and be a 'good' wife. I am not a horse, i will not be broken. You've seen enough of me to know that I can wield a sword better then most men. In return I will put on the act as the dutiful wife/intended. I will not challenge you in front of your men, and I will expect the same in front of mine. I am taking you at your word because my brother trusted you. You had no idea of his intentions, yet you still honored his wish to keep me safe. That weighs greatly on my decision."

Shifting slightly in her seat she spoke again. "If you can agree to the terms I've laid out then i will come with you, and if you agree I will do as my brother asks and will agree to be your wife." Her blue eyes looked back into his as she awaited his answer.

Tuadreck listened intently.

“Your highness, I accept your terms and look forward to your visit to my kingdom.”

Despite the seriousness of the situation he allowed a smile to play across his facen

“And please, do not hold back on my account. Your brother often spoke at great lengths about you, I would be disappointed not to see the look on the faces of the nobility if you challenge me. I shall announce my intentions to woo you at within this week and expect your reply thereafter. You shall then be welcomed into Valmonte at your leisure, Of course the more public the more solidified your hold over your kingdom shall be.”

He bowed deeply then rose his eyes holding hers for a moment before he bid farewell and headed to his chambers. His first order of business was to speak to the stablemaster and ensure their horses would be brought to the palace and looked after. He then found his room and bathed himself before ensuring his armour was stored safely and his sword was placed next to him in his bed. He would take no chances tonight. His hand rested on the hilt of his sword, he did not expect any assassins tonight but Verithas had always taught him to be prepared for as many twists of fate as possible. He fell into a deep sleep.

Tatiana barely got any sleep. She stored the emotion deeply within over everything that had and would be happening. Hearing that the Tu and his men were up she made her way into the mess hall where her men and his laughed and ate. Her men stopped upon seeing her and rose as the lady in black entered the room.

"Please go back to eating, Prince Tuadreck once you are finished i would be honored if you'd take a walk with me in the garden." She gave him a slight curtsy and made her way out to the garden and waited.

Once he arrived she rose from her bench and gave him a slight curtsy. "I know that you wish to return back to Valmonte" she said lightly taking his arm. "The people loved Jared, I wish to give him a proper service and burial." She stopped for a moment regathering her demure. "I would be honored if you would accompany me. Jared would have wanted you there. It will also start the rumors that we need of your interest in wooing me."

Taking a deep breath she continued. "I find myself in need of a confidant, and the only person i would ever turn to has been taken away from me. I am not quite sure what to do with myself. What you are doing for him, its selfless. It shows me a lot about your character. I hope that in this endeavor we can become friends. It would make this much less awkward and the transition would be much smoother. You have me at a disadvantage. My brother has told you a great deal about me, but I know very little of you other than he trusted you with me."

"When i said i wouldn't challenge you, i meant in front of you men. However in front of the nobles I do feel that a united front is the best course of action. Imagine their faces if you said "I must converse with my wife before coming to a conclusion." she let out a laugh, the first since her brother died.

"However that may make you seem weak in their eyes. So it is probably best if you don't. It will take time to undo a great deal of what my father did that hinders my kingdom. I realize there are a lot of changes that have to be made and that this has to be done in small steps. Too much to soon will cause a frenzy, what I've done is going to create some panic. But it will be less then the nobles anticipate. Jared and I made it our duty to get to know the people. To help and work alongside them when we could. It was important that they knew we weren't our father."

She took a flowers petal between her fingers and felt its silky smoothness. One of the servants rushed forth and bowed before them. "Forgive me for the interruption your highness' but Lord Jacques and Lord Calbert are requesting an audience with you."

"Advise them I am in mourning and am not accepting visitors. They may place their request to see me with the courts clerk as per is custom."

"yes your highness I advised them of that but they said to tell you that if Prince Tudreck is permitted an audience they demand they have the same right."

"Please have Leutenant Archibold see me"

The servant nodded and disappeared.

"your highness'" Archibold said kneeling.

"It seems we have visiting Lords that are demanding the same right as a prince. How do you feel we should proceed?"

"It is treason my queen to consider yourself equal to your rulers." he replied.

"True, but instead of death, I think they need a lesson in humility. Since they seem to have forgotten and show gratitude for the status they do hold. I think we shall put them to work in the fields for a week and let them endure what they put their people through. Perhaps they will then be grateful for their status, and maybe even show some respect for those they are above."

"Yes my queen" Archibold said with a smile and left their presence.

"What are your thoughts on all i have said?" she questioned Tu as they began to walk again.

He listened as she spoke of her need for someone to confide in and to have at the funeral. She was right, he needed to return to his capital city however his loyalty to his former friend overtook that need. She watched as she effortlessly dismissed the advances of two lords who had already begun to make advances on her in the hope of seizing power. He chuckled slightly, she would make a very competent ruler, already she commanded with confidence and finesse. He also noted that this coupled with their appearance at the funeral would indeed fuel the rumors that the prince was beginning to woo her. This would no doubt raise the ire of those that wish to also be Tatiana’s suitor but this was to be expected. she took his arms and asked his thoughts on her words as they continued their trek through the palace garden.

“If I may your highness an appearance from both of us would help begin to solidify your rule, and it would be an honour to be counted as your friend in these troubled times.”

He allowed himself a smile as the passed the pool where small fish darted through the water.

“I must say given what your brother has spoken of about suitors running from your very presence I am amazed there is anyone brave enough to face your almost mythical status simply to gain power. I for one have not seen this side of you despite having heard so much about it, but I’m sure I will in due time. For now I will advise my mother and father of my absence. Myself and my men will remain here for the burial and to assist you in any way you may require.”

They were interrupted by a commotion as two finely dressed figures came towards them muttering, closely followed by lieutenant Archibold who apologised before going to grab one of the men. Tuadreck held up his hand and spoke.

“Wait a moment Archibold, allow me to deal with this.”

The pair, who Tuadreck assumed were lords Jacques and Calbert began to spew epithets and and insults at him demanding to know why they had been denied the right to speak to her.

“How dare you sir, come to our kingdom and presume the right to hold audience with----”

He was cut of by Tuadrecks fist, it drove into Jacques’ stomach and he gasped bending over to find Tu’s elbow driving into his back. He doubled over onto the ground and fought to catch his breath. Tu nodded to Archibold who drove his foot into the back of Calberts knees and he fell over kneeling. Tu’s voice was hard.

“I am Prince Tuadreck of Lumanor, Son of King Bolveck and Queen Lanaris, captain of the 5th company of the King’s army and you will address me as your highness. You two do not seem to have the wherewithal to realise when you are outranked.”

He returned to Tatiana’s side taking her arm and bowed slightly “Your highness, please dispense of the punishment as you see fit.”

Tatiana was irate that these men were allowed to get as far as they did. Though she was amused to show Prince Tu take charge and dispense his own justice.

Addressing the two men that knelt before her she spoke "I am your Queen, you do not make demands upon me, you make requests and I choose whether to deny or approve them. You have disregarded my response, insulted my guest, and had the audacity to presume me as your equal. You gentlemen have committed treason. Be careful in your response gentlemen for it will determine your fate."

Lord Jacques hung his head "Forgive me your highness' I have forgotten my place and apologize sincerely for my actions." Lord Colbalt on the other hand attempted to rise only to have the back of his knees kicked by Lt. Archibold again. "You are not my queen, this injustice will not be stood for."

"Lord Jacques you are hereby sentenced to a month of servitude upon the lands you rule to ensure that you value your status."

"Lord Colbalt, Your insolence and disregard for status will serve as an example. You are stripped of your lands, your title, and will the towns attraction shackled in the square until your date of execution."

"Lt. Archibold, your task was simple, instead you allowed these men to pass you. Their intent could have been malice posing a risk to myself and my guest. You will make arrangements to ensure this never happens again. If it does It will be your head."

"Yes Your Majesty" Lt. Archibold replied with humility calling for one of the guards to assist him in carrying out the punishments she laid out.

Taking Tu's arm again after they left they began to walk. Breaking the silence she smiled softly. "Perhaps one day i'll tell you what i did to make the suitors flee. It always irritated Jared that he didn't know. I of course proclaimed my innocence, but I think that it was never taken seriously" she let out another small laugh.

"I appreciate your willingness to stay for a few days. I do believe it will help solidify my rule. Those two were just the beginning of whats to come i'm afraid. The sooner we join forces the better it will be."

Tu watched with interest as Tatiana dealt with the two then took his arm and continued their walk in peace. She joked and laughed about the secret to her making suitors scarce and thanked him indicating if they were to cement her rule they should act swiftly and decisively. Tuadreck nodded.

“Indeed, as tensions between our two kingdoms have always been terse I will announce my support for your cause.”

They continued the walk then he bid her farewell as they set about each other’s arrangements. Tuadreck spent the next few days organising messages to his parents and requesting an honour guard from his company be sent on the day of the funeral to make a further show of Lumanor’s support for its new ruler. He also sent for his formal armour and some clothes for himself, Sirain and Arrok. He and the princess spent the time walking arm across the palace’s outer wall and through the palace guardians making sure their fondness for each other was spectated by various members of the public and the court.

Finally the day came and Tuadreck prepared himself. His steel formal armour was lacquered in with black edging and looked impressive on Tu’s tall, broad shoulders. On one pauldron there was the likeness of a snarling dragon’s head, matching his sword, while the other was wrought in the form of a growling bear. He had opted to go without his hell as today he wished to be recognized. He checked his straps and sword then went out to meet his company. Fifty of his soldiers had been sent from Valmonte and when he emerged in the palace courtyard they instantly stood to attention. Arrok stepped out quickly inspecting them before nodding. Tuadreck spoke.

“At ease men, we should have no trouble today however be alert at all times. Arrok, the princess will be here soon with her guard and the coffin. We shall stand at the front and make our way through the city, the prince was well loved so we should have no trouble from the the general public however keep an eye on the nobles as the join the funeral train. They will no doubt be jealous of my walking at her side.”

On cue the princess emerged from the palace with her retinue behind her, his men fell in line on the other side of the coffin and Tuadreck went to greet the princess as she signalled her men to pause, Arrok halted Tu’s men also. Tu bowed deeply then silently took her hand as the gates opened to the throng outside.

Tatiana had enjoyed the princes company more then she anticipated she would. He didn't try to woo her, or flatter her, he acted with respect and courtesy at all times.
The procession began as she took his arm and their men lined up accordingly. She made it her business even during this time to make a mental note of the few nobles that did not attend her brothers funeral.

As he was placed in his tome and the doors were closed she found her strength faltering. Gripping the princes arm tightly he some how lent her the strength to do what must be done. Releasing his arm she stepped upon the steps of the tomb and turned to face the crowd that had gathered.

"Today is a sad day as we lay to rest the rightful king of Valora. He was an honorable son, brother, and friend to us all. He believed as i do that the people are what make our kingdom great. We fought tirelessly to find ways around the injustice our father brought to you. Now I with my soon to be husband will be setting forth on a journey to better the lives of its people. It is our promise that your voices are to be heard. I urge you to be patient for all the injustices you've suffered cannot be undone over night. Our union will bring greatness and security for both of our kingdoms and form an unbreakable alliance."

"Long Live Queen Tatiana" shouts came from the crowd inspiring the rest to join in.

Tatiana held out her hand welcoming relinquishing her place and taking a step behind him so he may address his future subjects and give a few words on his lost friend.

Tuadreck listened solemnly to the words of the princess nodding as she finishing and relinquished the dais. Tu laid his hand against her shoulder as the crossed paths and his eyes met hers for a moment before continuing up the steps of the tomb, turning to address the throng. He took note of the faces that were slightly surprised and chagrined at the announcement of his betrothal to the princess.

“People of Valoria, I know that in the past my kingdom and yours have been at odds. We have been enemies, friends, shed blood side by side and as foes but from this moment on there shall never be war between our two countries. Prince Jared was like brother to me, he taught me much of your people and of your history, but most of all through our friendship he showed me that love will find a way to bring peace no matter how dire the circumstances. It is my wish to honour the ideals of my late friend, to see his dream come to fulfilment, and so let it be known that henceforth Lumanot and Valoria shall stand as one against whatever ills beset it. Darkness and corruption shall hinder us no more, I have no doubt that Princess Tatiana and I shall stand united against all the challenges we shall face to rebuild what has been lost.”

He banged his fist against his chest then raise it in a salute. Nodding to Tatiana who came to his side, they turned and knelt, behind them the crowd fell to their knees and silence reigned as they paid their respects to the fallen prince. Finally Tu and Tatiana rose, as did the crowd, and turned, Tu offered his arm and the made their way through through the crowd which parted as they approached, their retinue close behind.

As the reentered the castle the men both his and her dispersed to their duties. Leaving him and her alone. They entered the sitting room and reveled in the quiet of the moment.

"Jared would have been honored with the speech you gave today. You truly touched the hearts of the people and inspired them to hope for a better tomorrow." Taking her eyes away from him for a moment she attempted to regain composure and not break down into a puddle of tears as her emotions were edging her towards.

"I know that i said i would go with you to your kingdom, but things are still so unknown here. There were a couple of nobles missing from the funeral, and I need to organize spies to find out why and be sure they are not plotting against us. I feel that the kingdom is to vulnerable to leave with so many unknown factors at play. Do you think it would be an inconvenience if we invited your parents here and held the wedding ? Of course later we could visit your kingdom once things were in place here."

Tu listened to Tatiana as she told him of her need to stay in the kingdom, as she spoke he removed his pauldrons and placed them on the nearby divan. He stretched his arms nodded as she finished. He waited till she was seated then sat down himself and looked her in the eyes.

“If I am to stay here my parents will need to be alerted to the true nature of the situation. They will know it has something to do with your brothers death but they will no doubt have questions that must be answered, the least of which will be why their son has suddenly decided to marry the princess of the neighboring kingdom. News of our public announcement of betrothal will spread quickly, I will send Arrok to let advise them of as much of the situation as necessary.”

He allowed himself a smile as he thought of his parents.

“My father is slightly cantankerous but he is kindhearted, you will like my mother I think, she has a strong will, though maybe not as much fire as you Princess. I will remain here at your service as your betrothed and, if you will allow it, a friend. I feel you may need all the help you can get to strengthen your rule and weed out those who wish to see it fall into chaos once more.”

Tatiana nodded as he spoke. "Thank you, you have truly been the light in my gloomy world these past few days. I do consider you a friend, your diligence and consideration for my kingdom, and my welfare has been unfaltering. My brother chose well to have you as his friend, and I am lucky to call you mine."

Her hand reached out and laid upon his. Closing her eyes she opened them a single tear escaping. Using her other hand she reached up and wiped the tear from her face and smiled softly. "It seems my emotions demand to be seen regardless of how i try to hold them in. You have demonstrated your leadership abilities, I look forward to being able to share in the responsibilities with you." she closed her eyes again trying to regain her composure.

"Your parents seem delightful, Jared and I didn't really have the luxury of having parents. We were more of commodities and looked after each other. I will do my best not to give them reason to doubt that i'm a suitable match for you."
