I have seen letters from other authors stating that a series does not work in terms of interest to the readers. I have just finished a series in Exhibitionist Voyeur category called 'Áddicted To Attention', a twelve part series dealing in multiple categories and tracing a journey toward sexual fulfilment. The chapter 11 received more votes than any other story that I have ever posted. This would appear to indicate that there are times when conventional wisdom does not necessarily apply. The secret is to capture and then hold the reader's interest by a good balance of Plot, Character development, Language, Descriptive scenes and above all Believeable Sexual Interaction. I have encouraged readers to Email me and apart from a few idiotic ravings that indicate sexual fruatration, I recieved many well thought out and intelligent comments about my writing. As I said before, voting is a lottery but would indicate interest in the stories fairly well in more general terms.
My novel, Addicted to Attention is on the site. Prelude to. and My Sexual Awakening series became Addicted to Attention and I am considering putting the next part of the novel on as Mistress Barbara Chapters 1-12 or so. I would welcome comment from other serious Authors on this site. I know that there are many of you out there in literotica land.
Please comment on the BB or write to Barbara at revdickt@hotmail.com I think that this site is a magnificent opportunity for intending Authors to practice their craft and get intelligent feedback if it is used correctly.

Interesting. I'd take a look at your stuff if you left some links here, but, like most people, I'm too lazy to do the lookup myself. I'd like to know what category the chapter 11 is in. Some categories pull more votes no matter whether it's a chapter story or not.

Barbara,

I posted awhile back asking about sequelized or multipart
stories myself. As you know, you were one of two replies to that
post. I still haven't figured out the voting tendencies because
with my stories (as mentioned in my previous post) the voting has
been without any discernable pattern(s). And at this point I'm
just having fun writing and don't really give a hoot how people vote. Sure, I'd love it if they liked my stories, but it's all just personal taste anyway. It's great to get that occasional positive
feedback, and I really do enjoy that, but my goal is to just try to
get better each time I write. My two most recent stories have
apparently stirred the most attention, and they are almost exact
opposites in theme and style.
JEANETTE: SLAVE TO PASSION is just sex...that's it....and that's
all I was trying for. Maybe the SLAVE in the title hit a chord,
because that story got more responses than any of my other ones. My non-erotic little romance tale, LOVE WILL FIND A WAY
(thanks for the compliments by the way) sharply contrasts JEANETTE, and while it didn't get as many votes as JEANETTE I have gotten more positive emails than usual with it....and I thank
all those who took the time to comment on my work.
I do appreciate your reply to my earlier post and your compliments on LOVE WILL FIND A WAY. I hope to find the time
to check out your series as soon as I can. It sounds interesting,
and I have no doubts it is.
In closing, let me just say, well, people read and vote as they
will. I just hope they like my stories, whether they vote or not.
I think it's that occasional email where someone says "thanks"
or "good work" or even "more please" that does it for me. The
voting is nice (if the score is high..lol), but that personal touch and
someone taking time to email....like you did....that makes my day.
Thanks for saying hi and reading my story, Barbara. I'll be looking up your stories too, just to see what makes your brain
tick....lol. Take care and keep writing.
Love & Lust,
Mike

Series stories work very well.

I think that most readers on this site visit on a daily basis and check the newest stories out. If they find one that appeals to them that is obviously serialized, they tend to follow that story. Keep them short and frequent, rather than longer as most readers seem to want a quick read between whatever else they may be doing with the internet. It's just my opinion but it certainly seems to be the best way to hold the interest of the readers. My hope is that having found a writer that appeals to the viewer, that viewer will read the other work listed under the Author's name. This principle is also true of traditional publishing when you think about it. How many people have bought a book, liked the writing style or the content and then bought more books that have been written by the same Author. I know that I have. This site is outstanding for reasons of publicising an Author's work and generating interest and a certain following. It is also a fact that each chapter has the possibility of attracting more readers every day. On a single story basis, so much of a credible literary work is taken up with character development and evolving plot that it is impossible to adequately convey as much as the writer may wish in a short story. On that basis, I believe that it is better to segment the story over several chapters than write a longer one that will lose the reader before it finishes what the writer is attempting to get across. My opinion is only that of a humble virgin. {I love that} What do you think??

Serialized Stories!

Barbara: If a story is really good, and I think that yours are, they can't be told in a length that is suitable for one posting. By breaking up stories into chapters, the continuity holds up better and readers have something to look forward to each day or so, rather that breaking up the story into their own daily reading habits and running the risk of loosing their places or worse the characters in which they are most interested. I like your chapter break downs and hope that you will continue that format.

A series can work

My first series...."Masturbation Club" did very well. It was enjoyable writing it, as well as taking it off in differing directions in order to appeal to a wider range of tastes. I think a series is
much easier to do and develop as the characters seem to come to life over a period of time, and certain character traits become more and more important to both the story as well as to the interaction between other characters in a story. Thats often hard to do in a much shorter single story.

So for those who enjoy writing a series...I say go for it. I love looking forward to the next chapter when I get hooked on one I have begun reading.....

Series stories work very well.

Sandman, Bacomic fan and John all appear to agree with my views on writing a serial story on the site. I note that they are both virgins too. Forgive my preoccupation with this. I assume it is a rating based on contributions to the BB. I thought that after submitting over 50 stories to the site I would cease to be a virgin. How does one become 'Really Experienced' like Mickie and
Amadeus, I wonder? Well, virginal as my views may be, I hope that I have encouraged new writers to try a serialized story. It might be my imagination, but from the writers point of view, I see many one-off storylines that beg for further exploration in depth and variation of taste. It is hard to categorise a good story in one particular genre. I stuck to the Exi/Voy category, although the story embraces BDSM, Group sex, Loving wives and even Mind Control. The many comments that I received along the way would indicate overall approval for this view. I hedged my bets by changing the titles three times over the contributions in my latest series. My Sexual Awakening, {6 Chs} became Addicted to Attention {12 Chs} and then progressed to Mistress Barbara. { 15 chapters although only 4 have been viewed so far.}
I edited the novel to make it more interesting to the readers on this site, retaining enough of the political message contained therein to make the reader aware of my political leanings.
Serial stories are great. Way to go.

When are we no longer virgins anyway?

Good question...I'm so new to all this I'd appreciate knowing as well.

I currently have 32 stories (and one poem) posted. Or is the "virgin" thing simply related to the number of discussionary comments being made here?

Also...I still don't understand the picture thing either...so if some body could enlighten me about that, I'd appreciate it as well.

There are four significant levels of BB user that depend on the number of posts on the bulletin board.

30 post removes the virgin tag.

100 posts allows you to have a custom avatar (which effectively means that since there are no stock avatars, you can then have an avatar.)

500 posts makes you a "Literotica Guru." There is no special powers granted at Guru Level except "prestige."

1000 posts will allow you to customize you title to anything you want that will fit in the text box for changing it.

It's all basically insignificant except for the 100 and 1000 post levels which enable you to do something you haven't before.

If it makes either of you feeel better, my author name is also a virgin with only two posts. Of course, that's because I post everything under this username.

Considerably enlightened. Thanks

My virginal thanks to Wierd Harold. Jeez! Over three thousand posts. Hard to believe that he has the time to write literature as well! I think I'll settle on the next step up from VIRGIN. Whew!
I'd hate to be considered opinionated.
Barbara Anne. { A much less opinionated old lady.}
P.S. I'll settle for Author of the Year. PLEEEESE.

Thank you oh Literotica Guru!!!

Much appreciated Weird Harold!

At least now I understand what I have to measure up to!
(A very long ways away I might add to 100 posts!) <whew>

However....I shall perservere and carry forward!

On to the fourth series now.

Just to update you all, my Mistress Barbara series is nearly over, Chapter 13 was posted today. There are 16 in total. Voting was generally good and I recieved lots of neat Emails. There is nothing like encouragement, I believe.
Anybody considering a serious attempt at the record for the number of stories submitted in any one month by any Author would do well to note that NZ has the America's Cup at the moment. In my own small way, fiercely patriotic, I want to add to NZ's glory. Take note all you American Authors out there? If I don't get the writer of the year prize this year, it won't be for the lack of trying very very hard. On the way I might just break some other records.
SUGGESTIONS: Most persistant Bitch ever to submit.
Most serial stories.
Most blatent attention seeker and whiner.

There has GOT to be something that we can hang beside the America's Cup this year?

ANY SUGGESTIONS LAUREL?????

Let's hear it for middle aged N.Z. lady contributors. What do you say. As always I await with baited breath. I do love baiting.

Seriously, I believe this site is simply the best. And no! I'm not trying to suck up to the Webmaster.

Mistress Barbara!

Dear Mrs. Adams: I am glad to see some light at the end of the Mistress Barbara tunnel. It's been great fun and I hate to see it end. Your story had flowed very well and each chapter ends like the old movie seriels that I watched on Saturday afternoons at the movies. Your chapter ends just as the heros are being burned at the stake and we are told to come back next week. I always want to read the next chapter but my old body (61) can only handle one chapter of Mistress Barbara a day. What will you have for all of us to read when Mistress Barbara is concluded? Also, will be we able to get ii in a paper back book form soon. I have those that I want to share the adventures with who don't have access to computers. Thanks for your stories! READ THIS

Every writer needs time off to recuperate. Series take so much of a writer's time. Erotic Adventures WILL continue. Feedback has beem tremendous. This time I might favour my readers with my picture so that they can lust after me?

I think series writing works and in Barbara's case they certainly did. I would certainly think that the reader's will come back to a series if they enjoy it.
I have one other writer tell me the series idea did not work for him but i think that after reading his stories that the readers lost interest. I admire people like Barbara who write a series and stick to it not tapering off or boring thee reader with repitition
So I say go for it!

Well guys the time is almost here, and I have been a busy lady again. I plan to put one on every day for a week. That takes us up to chapter 12 of Erotic Adventures. Debbie, you'll be pleased to know that I plan to 'marry in' all the series written so far.
It will probably seem like 'War and Peace' with a heavily erotic twist. It might be more fun to read than Tolstoy's classic epic, I HOPE.

My next series might be a re-write of early American History.

I can see it now. "The EROTIC ADVENTURES OF DANIEL BOONE"

I just hope it amuses all my wonderful fans. I'm determined to win a prize, of some sort, to hang beside the 'Americas Cup' before 2003. Even if it IS only for the most persistent TRYER.

New Zealand might only be a small country but we ARE as PATRIOTIC as all hell. Come on all you N.Z. literotica FANS.

Mistress Barbara Chapter 15

Dear Mrs. Adams: I have just finnished Chapter 15 of Mistress Barbara and am looking forward to Chapter 16, the last one but do hate to see this story end. I love all the characters and have made friends with many of them. I hope that they don't disappear into obscurity but continue to live in your works. Since I limit myself to only one of your chapters per day, because of the toll they take on my aged body, I will wait until tomorrow to complete the book. The helicopter scenes were marvelous. I only wish that I was riding in that helicopter. You write as if you have actually flown in a helicopter and make it believable for us earthbound mortals. Please continue! volvosu@hotmail.com

HOPE LIVES ETERNAL. Read 'Erotic Adventures to see why

Dear John: I recently penned another series. I too, loved the characters, literally. Of course they will never die. They live on in your imagination as well as mine. 'Erotic Adventures will make frequent references to the characters you love and they will even have guest appearances in my new epic. One day, ALL my short stories will reflect on my main theme. At THAT point it will resemble 'War and Peace', in length if not in subject matter. I hope my version is;

(A) As famous.
(B) A lot more interesting to read.

Thanks for your concern,

Barbara. N.Z.G.S.K.
