I am writin a series of stories about a young m to f TS who is 18 years old and just becoming sexually active. She goes to a meeting of the GLBTA. I have never been to any meetings, and I don't know anything about the protocol or practices. I have been to many 12 step meetings, and I patterned the GLBTA meeting after them. A chairperson calls on persons sitting around a table and those persons say something about themselves or decline to speak. Would a GLBTA meeting be something like that?

I realize these meetings are not meet markets, and they are more than social gatherings, but how much of a social side would such a group have? How likely would it be, for instance, for two gay men to meet there and hook up together? Would this be frowned on or would it be accepted as perfectly normal. I hope I'm not insulting anybody, but I really need to know. :D

Well i've only been to my transgender group meetings and the social side is a big part of it. I don't know if anyone ever hooks up from those or not but a lot of us have become good friends. The therapist speaks mainly but then goes around the group of say about 30 of us and gives most of us a chance to talk about our transitions and our experiences its quite informative. If your interested in the inner workings of a glbta meeting my suggestion is to contact a local group if you can find one and ask to sit in on a meeting and see if they will allow it.

What does GLBTA stand for? At first I thought it was Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Allies, also known as a GSA (Gay/Straight Alliance), but then it occured to me that you might be thinking of Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Anonymous, which is a very different thing.

I was thinking it stood for GLBT Association, which would be a support group, that would sometimes also demonstrate against bigotry, etc. The idea of GLBT Anonymous seems like a contradiction, because the members would have come out of the closet.

How would the meetings of either group go?

No no, I've never heard of GLBT Anonymous either, I don't think they would exist! Except maybe in an ex-gay sense, and I don't know anything about that. I was just confused by your meaning so I figured I would check.

As for GLBT Association type stuff, it depends on the setting. Is this a high school group, college group, community group, activist group, social group, singles group, etc? It might be easier to describe a potential meeting to you if we knew what the setting was. :)

Okay, I am describing it as a community activist group but, for the story line, it has to have a social side too. Probably the social side should be dominant, meaning many of the members join to meet people they like to be around. It's set in London, by the way, if that makes any difference.
