I think we'd be better off if we paid for things that are of huge value to society (education, health care, perhaps even daycare), with the huge wealth created in the US. In that model, people could support a meaningful life on a low paying job, especially with some food assistance.

Just handing money over can create problems for people who never learned how to handle it, or have a substance abuse problem that prevents them from handling it. There is an interesting relationship to handing Viagra over to fat old men here, but I'll leave it alone.

I don't think you need to worry about the political ramifications, state legislators all across the country have made sure the disadvantaged have become the disenfranchised.

Very few make welfare a career and even those who do it's better than the alternative which is prison. Not only do you pay them welfare, but you pay to have someone watch them while their at it and it becomes harder for them to get a job if they want to elevate above crappy apartment and bad food.
