"That's crazy. I have never said that," he added. "What I said was, that is what Comey is saying Trump said. I have always said the President denies it. "
The "that" Giuliani was referring to were comments he made in July to George Stephanopolous. During that interview Giuliani said the following:
Needless to say, this furious backpedaling and denial is the result of the ongoing negotiations between the con artist and Mueller who wants the con artist to answer a few questions. If Giuliani admits the con artist said what Comey has said happened, but is now saying the con artist never said those words, then the con artist would be perjuring himself if he says he never said those words. Even if, originally, Giuliani admitted that is what the con artist has said.

After host George Stephanopoulos said to Giuliani that Comey says he took Trump's remark as direction, Giuliani responded that he was also told, "Can you give the man a break?" many times as a prosecutor.
"He didn't direct him to do that," Giuliani said. "What he said was, can you, can you give him a break."
"Comey says he took it as direction," Stephanopoulos interjected.
"Well, that's okay. He could have taken it that way, but by that time he had been fired," Giuliani responded. "He said a lot of other things, some of which has turned out to be untrue. The reality is, as a prosecutor, I was told that many times, 'can you give the man a break,' either by his lawyers, by his relatives, by his friends. You take that into consideration. But you know, that doesn't determine not going forward with it."
