Why do hairdressers feel the need to impose their views on how I should wear my hair? Why do I have to justify and convince every fucking hairdresser I've had in the past four years that I like long hair, and don't care whether they would rather have me cut it short or whether they think it would look better? I'm paying them. Why should I have to fight this battle every fucking time?

After asking for a quarter inch trim last Friday, I ended up with a lot more than that gone, and every time I walk past the mirror or run a hand through my hair, I'm just filled with anger and frustration. It took me a long time to grow it out and I am so pissed off that I have to start the process all over again.

I know what you feel.

A year ago I finally found a *friseur* who does what I want. Call it consumer loyalty, but I'm sticking with her. :p

Dood, the same crap has happened to me over and over again. I'll go in, tell the stupid woman exactly what I want done and she'll just go ahead and cut it how /she/ thinks it will look good. She just did it again last week and I'm never going back. Fuck that.

That's why I never get mine cut anymore. I have a friend that trims it for me (straight across at the bottom) every so often, and that's all I have done.

Everytime I've tried going to have it cut somewhere, they cut it the way they want, instead of listening to what I have to say.

Sometimes, wearing it long the way I do has it's advantages.

For me, the level of skill is inconsequential if she won't do what I want done. It's a service industry and part of service is giving the customer what they want. I wear mine long usually, but I get a lot of split ends and damage, no matter what I try. It's easiest to just have it regularly trimmed, but I don't want to loose a lot, just the parts that make it look like a rat's nest.

my current stylist is incredible. Shelistens to what I want and does just that. If she wants to try something else, she asks and dosen't get put out if I say no.

I would suggest finding someone who thinks less of their sense of style and more about making sure you come back.

Oh, that's a beautiful thing. I had one of those once. I loved her so much that I went back to her for a year after I moved across the country - every time I'd go home to visit friends and family, Peggy would get a call. I raise a glass in glass in Peggy's honor!

What sucks is that I love the way they color my hair at this place. So I don't want to stop going there. I just want them to stop doing shit like adding layers when I don't want them or telling me, you know, you'd look great with short hair...

Lovely, silky, swaying, floating, flying, streaming, draping long hair...hold on to it, baby.

Hold on to your stylist for dear life! Give her big tips! She's worth her weight in gold!

Oh, I plan on it, despite my mother's pleas for me to "do something with all that damn hair." ;)

You know, you would think that, of all people, hairdressers would understand the time and effort it takes into growing/keeping it long.

I would think they'd also understand how personal hair preferences are.

Yeah, that's kinda my problem too because this lady is really cheap and she does a nice job when she does what I tell her to...maybe I'll just send an anonymous complaint letter or something.

I tip as well as I can, but she knows my financial situation. Her son usually hangs out at the shop after school (she's a single mom) and Ihave been able to help him with homework several times. I think she appreciates that more than the tips :)

Homework tips are worth their weight in gold, too. :rose:

It's at times like this that I appreciate my short hair.

"Number three all over please."
<Bzzzzt>
"All done."

I love long hair on a lady. Call me a weirdo, but the right hair on a girl is enough to make me fall in lust.

Um. You're the customer. Tell them that.

I have the reverse problem. Everytime I tell them to take off even as much as six inches, they keep saying "are you sure you want me to do that?" Since I can only afford a haircut about once every 7 months, (it costs someone with my length 40 bucks for a simple trim,) they should be glad I'm not telling them to shave it all off. In the end, they never seem to take off as much as I asked, leaving me with split ends which drive me nuts.

On top of that, they keep trying to give me (gasp) BANGS!!!!!

It curls easily. And straightens out quickly.

What is it with mothers?? Mine does the same thing. For some reason, she thinks since I have natural curly hair that it should be kept short.

Jeanne, the next time you go, simply tell your stylist "Look, I really like the way you color my hair, but if you insist on cutting it the way you want it instead of the way I want it, then I'll take my business elsewhere."

I have the opposite problem. I love the way my stylist cuts mine, but we've been trying for four years, and she still hasn't gotten it the right shade of red.
