Watchin’ a Flick, I was, I was…when this farm girl, riding a horse near a small town in Iowa, dismounted and sashayed across a pasture.

She had only a small role in the film, a 2007 production with a plot similar to ‘Hoosiers’, a under-dog small town team wins big in Indiana, but this was in Iowa. “The Final Season”, turned out to be well written right down to the very young girl singing the National Anthem on the Pitcher’s Mound.

Since it is a recent film, I didn’t notice it was a ‘period piece’ until a sign on the baseball field showed, 1991; then the high waisted denim’s made a little more sense.

Now…I have a penchant for observing the female form and there is a marked difference between the spectator’s view of a high waist swing and sway and that of the low-rider, hip hugger, and butt crack boogie style of late.

I may even have noticed, like skirt length, a small change in stylishness taking place in the fashion world, as Jeans creep back up to nigh waist high; but then again, it could just be wishful thinking…

Skirts have indeed become rare, note my poem, "A Girl in a Skirt", an artistic statement that skirts indeed have gone the way of the Hula Hoop...however..

In this small community at the local supermarket, Mexican ladies and girls often display skirts, always either long and full or at least of modest length, a cultural difference no doubt, but the why's & wherefore's escape me.

Ever since showing any skin became acceptable, waistlines have tended to cycle. By far my favorite period in time was the early 2000s, when ultra low-rise was in fashion and those long shirts hadn't yet come out. Admittedly ultra lowrise isn't for every body type, but I personally found it thrilling to be able to see where pubic hair normally would have started, and see evidence at least some of it had been removed. This of course gave rise to the low-rise bikini bottom, which is still generally popular among young women.

The trouble with low-rise of course is "muffin-top" where even reasonably athletic women can end up having to push up and pool what tummy fat there is to all sit on top of the waist.

In my mind, high-waisted jeans are "mom jeans". Waistlines peaked when I was a kid and were already falling as I hit puberty, and started getting low during my college years. I would imagine a lot of men prefer the look that was in style during those key years. I've also noticed a lot of men and women tend to maintain the style that was popular when they were about 20; my brother is definitely GenX and only a few years younger, and he and most of his friends his age always tuck in their shirts. As for me and my age group, unless it's a formal shirt that demands it, we always leave our t-shirts and club wear untucked.

I am not certain of the reception of the following thoughts, but then, aside from the usual disagreement, when has that ever stopped me?

Mystery. Yes, Mystery in what is suggested but not seen, silhouetted, "The Seven Veils of Salome", attracts the male eye, I would suggest, more so than a naked or half naked female form.

Even the total coverage of Islamic nations; those sparkling brown eyes peeking from behind the Burka/veil, is often more enticing than would be a fully disclosed face and figure...

That is not to say, mind you, that a Bikini, on an appropriate form, is not delectable....:)

I own a clothing store that targets young women, 14 to 30. Skirts and dresses made in the 50's and 60's are strong sellers. Knee length dresses and skirts stayed on the hangers until we started to shorten the hems. Now we can't keep up with the demand.

Hmm, so what is it? I haven't seen a woman in a skirt in years!

Maybe it's a Canadian trend then, but I see lots of women, teens to 50's wearing skirts of all lengths. The younger, the shorter of course, but there are plenty of Cougar types that show off some very fine legs. I like jeans that look painted on, no matter what the rise. Seeing those curves encased so nicely always gets me going.

Can't keep up the demand for shorter hemlines or the knee lengths?

sorry...

Women like the patterns and material used in the 60's, but with a higher hemline. The same is true for cocktail dresses. We cut off the sleeves and raise the hem. This makes them much attractive to buyers.

Skirts have indeed become rare, note my poem, "A Girl in a Skirt"...

They have? I've always loved skirts and dresses; I just seem to stand taller when I wear them. Of course, due to my line of work, mine are usually knee length. Additonally, one extra perk of skirts and dresses is that they are easy to fit. I've lost over 50lbs over the last two years, and it seems I still randomly lose a few here and there, so skirts and dresses accommodate the lost inches longer than pants do (no sag factor)

As for pants, I'm glad there are different options for me to choose now. High-waisted is not a good style for my body type.

I wouldn't say skirts are rare. I sometimes pick my granddaughter up at her high school and I see a lot of other girls there too. The majority may be wearing jeans, but skirts are quite common, especially during hot weather.

lol..er..I find high waste jeans are 80s style. As we all know, the 80s was the pinnacle of western society.

Hipster kids in their early 20s have adopted a lot of '80s style in their fashion, especially hats and those godawful neon colored sunglass frames. There seems to be a huge divide between those of us who were alive for the 80s the first time around, and those who were infants or not born yet.

If I see someone weaing a pair of zoobaz, I shall throw things.

Hey James,

whats a zoobaz?

According to Vogue hemlines raise when the economy is doing well and drop when the economy goes to hell. During the 20's himlines moved up to mid thigh. 10 years later, during the depression they dropped to ankle length.

There is another part to this too. In 1938 CoCo Chanelle stopped making women's dresses from anything excpet inexpensive garbardine and similar materials because the woolens, silks and cottens were needed for the coming war effort. Today, with 1000 cheap manmade fabrics, natural fibers are harder to find in women's clothes. Today it's Plastic belts, not leather. Dacron blends, not Cotton. Rayon, not Silk. Even silk stocking are either not available or so expense no one but the very rich can afford them. So it's Nylon instead.

My village is crawling with 'em. As a pal once said to me many years ago:

"If Mini skirts get any shorter,"
said the Fairy to the Gnome,
"There'll two more cheeks to powder
and a bit more hair to comb"

'Skirt?,' he said. 'More like a pelmet'

I am find the whole eighties retro thing disturbing. I was in high school in the mid eighties and as such am WAY too old wear the current revival. What freaks me out, is I walk down the street and think I am having some kind of weird flashback. I was in the mall the other day and three girls walked past me that looked like they fell out of my memories of 1986. If they'd had multiple ear piercings, I'd have lost it I think.

If the truth be told most women oughta cover up to hide the lard and the tats.

In my case, a burqa wouldn't do it! :p I seriously went past being able to cover my tatts about two years ago, but I NEVER flash the lard unless I am swimming(in which case, if you don't fucking like how I look, don't fucking look at me is the rule and I STRICTLY enforce this policy). I dress very sensibly, but fashionably for a woman of my girth. There are just some things you lose privileges for when you pass the 200lb line. No mini skirts, no mid-drift shirt and fuck a duck, unless you are exercising (see above rule), lycra is not your friend or anyone elses.

True, true and the other guy's right to an opinion ends at the end of his nose and that's the position I am enforcing.
