Many of those micro-distilleries also offer tours and on-site tastings (depending on laws where you live.) A trip to take a tour with a tasting to pick out his own present might be something he'd enjoy doing together with you. If you can pry him loose from his workaholic tendencies maybe even add a night at a nearby bed and breakfast and turn the visit into an entire birthday celebration.
