:heart:Hi everyone. I was just wondering what your thoughts were about stories where a main character might be a ghost. Would the story have to be posted as Sci-Fi & Fantasy or could it be Erotic Couplings? I want to place the story where it has the best chance to reach an audience who will enjoy it. Please advise.

Other plot points-

:heart:one character is Asian:heart:

:heart:It is straight M/F sex:heart:

:heart:There is a bittersweet plot, which might be consdered v. romantic:heart:

:heart:The ghost was a human so I don't think it is right for the non-human category either.

I think I posted a similar one to erotic coupling once. Of course, I left it open on whether he was really there or not.

Ah, yes, I did. It was titled "On the Afternoon Breeze." Readers didn't like it all that much--but I had no trouble with the site editors on posting it there.

I have written ghost stories, mainly for the Halloween Contest.

My alter ego, Jeanne D'Artois, writes ghost stories told by the ghost...

There were a bunch of ghost stories entered in the Halloween contest a couple years ago all with the title "Trick or Tryst". You might look there, Mia.

The one I mentioned above of mine was submitted to the Valentines Day contest, if I remember rightly.

Nonhuman

Depends on what kind of ghost story. Scary ghost stories go into Horror, romantic ghost stories go into Romance or Nonhuman. It even says it on the category list if you check it out: "Nonhuman--aliens, ghosts, androids and more"--so it's right there where you ought to post it.

Oh, and by definition, almost ALL GHOSTS were once human. Excepting the ghosts of animals, what other type of ghost is there? Saying that the ghost was once human and therefore doesn't belong in nonhuman makes no sense. A ghost is no longer human. If it was, it wouldn't be a ghost.

Nonhuman is the category for stories that are not meant to scare or horrify or be in any other land (Sci-fi/fantasy world), but rather a sexy/romantic tale in the here and now involving a "nonhuman" like a ghost, angel, etc. If you read the stories there, you'll find a ton of romantic stories involving ghosts (who were once human), angels, fairies, and aliens stories involving sex-in-a-crop-circle types rather than have-sex-with-alien-on-alien-world types (which go in sci-fi). Nonhuman really is where your story should go.

Nah... Ghost stories can go into any category, IMO. The ghosts I've written are very human-- the essence of the human they once were. In fact non-human is the last place I would look for a ghost story, normally... Laurel's categories leave something to be desired in more than one place, yanno?

:heart:I guess you can all see my dilemma. The non-human argument sounded good until I read Stella's comment. I read a couple romantic stories and the sex scenes are too mild. So now I don't think it fits there. And my ghost is not scary. It is a very human story and I don't think it fits in non-human because those stories are usually monsters like vampires and werewolves so the audience seems wrong. WWLS? (What would Laurel say?) Can't there be a ghost category?:heart:

:heart:Thanks everyone. I'd love to hear more opinions. This is my Valentine Contest entry.

Sounds like erotic couplings to me!

never having posted to EC, i don't know this, but it seems to me that, if you say, in your description, that one of the couplers is a ghost, you shouldn't have much complaint.

Could someone else give an opinion?

(BTW, sweets, can you go easy on the ? They are a distraction from your words-- which are the important part.)

:heart:Thanks everyone. I read a couple ghost stories in non-human but they were hidden in a sea of vampires. It would be helpful, once it is posted, to hear back from all of you to see if I made the right decision (or not) in your opinions.

:heart::heart::heart:Nope. Stella, we've only just met and you are trying to change me? There can never be too much love in the world. And these hearts are very pretty.:heart::heart::heart: (And thanks again for your help!)

With all the hearts you're dropping, this story is surely destined for the Valentine's Day Contest.

:heart:Today I'm leaning towards non-human. How many of you actively seek out stories to read in that category? And how many of you skip reading a contest story if you aren't interested in the category?

:heart:And how many of you say- I'm going to write an erotic couplings story (or other category)? I usually write the story then figure out the category.

:heart:I'd love to know how you other writers think.

I've never opened the non-human category file.

Sometimes I do think of a category I want to write in and let my mind come up with something on that. But I approach nearly every story with the thought of "what is different from whatever I've done before."

I check out the non-human when I'm searching for a good tentacle story. :D
