No, you're correct. I used to drive one of those big trucks and was on the road for two years (and yes, I got many comments from other truckers saying I "don't look like a trucker." Several propositions to "ride with them" as well). The only time I was flashed by a "four wheeler" was at nighttime (they were using my headlights to illuminate her leaning out the passenger window) when they didn't realize they were flashing a female driver. Otherwise I was left alone (or oblivious, I dunno, I was constantly shifting my eyes to check my mirrors).

But one of the most vivid moments I had in training was realizing "for real" what I could do to someone else on the road with it if I fucked up. Very sobering moment. It helped that they showed a movie of a truck hitting a school bus because the driver fell asleep.

Cell phones and tagging the vehicle ID on the actual truck (not the trailer/lorry) can hold them accountable if they have a "near miss." The company would rather you call them (the number on the trailer) so they can discipline the trucker themselves without the police being involved and driving up their insurance rates. If it's an "owner/operator," there's no real company to discipline the drivers, so might as well call the police. (Although the most reckless professional truckers I've seen on the highway were company drivers--overall less to lose if they fuck up, the company pays the damages and can fire them but if no one dies, then they don't personally take the hit. The owner/operator is running his own company and owns his own truck. OO's have a lot to lose and are usually the better drivers.)

I don't know what it's like in the USA (guessing it's the same) but here in .au, we have an ongoing problem with companies putting drivers under tight deadlines that they can't meet without cutting corners: speeding (both meanings) or skimping on rest breaks. They have speed limiters and log books, but there's always a way around those.

Now more companies are using GPS and "big brother" technology to enforce the legal rest breaks and making it harder to fudge log books. The companies are also setting more reasonable time schedules. I used to get 30-minute warnings from "Bitching Betty" that I had to find a safe/legal place to pull over for the night.

The big loophole is "team drivers." The truck is supposed to move most of the day and night, you just don't know for sure who is driving (the one who's had some sleep or the one who's been up for 14 hours).

For some reason, Indian driver teams were known as some of the worst for trying to cut corners and circumvent the limits. There was a story from a mechanic at my operating system who was trying to do a repair job on a team truck driven by two immigrant Indians. They'd cut a hole in the floorboard to take a shit out the bottom so they wouldn't have to stop the truck to use a bathroom. Human feces was smeared all along the bottom of the truck.
