this a problem for anyone else? i'm just today starting out, but as i jot down more and more ideas i get turned on and feel the need to stop and j/o. then once i finish wanking i fear i'll lose the creative energy, so to speak.

this is what has kept me fom starting for a long time. I kept getting these ideas for good stories, then i would go and jack off and when i was finished i would say to myself: well i guess i'll write it later, not in the mood now...

How do you guys cope with this?

Type with one hand.

Welcome to the AH, home of the one-hand typists.

Well, truthfully, for me I need the increasing arousal to get through a story. Orgasm makes me lose interest, so I write and write and write and let the orgasm be the reward for finishing it.

thanks,, ii'll try to follow your method in the future. unfortunately too late for now.... lol

A problem? Why would this be listed in the problem column?

I held off for an entire week once while writing my longest story, some 67k words. Hardest week of my life, but biggest payoff, also still my favorite story. Hold off, man.

Gee, I guess you guys have a whole lot of time to wait between "moods" then, huh? My condolences. :D

Wank first, write later!

A scenario that makes you wank is potentially a good story: it can have the same result for readers. However, you need to separate the wanking from the writing.

Once you are sure that the scenario gets you off - and the personal turn-on is mostly satisfied - that's the time to get writing. Instead of just doing it for you, that's when you can do it for readers.

Remember just what it was that got you off, and make those elements part of your writing.

Creative energy is half of the equation. Conscious control is the other half.

Your problem is an occupational hazard.....write, titillate, wank, write, titillate, wank.....yatta, yatta, yatta................

Write while you're horny.

I find it's better to write if I haven't had sex for a while.

My mind is thinking about sex and my creative juices are flowing. However, once I've had it, it's hard to imagine sex with the same level of excitement for a while.

What do they say... absence makes the heart grow fonder?

Maybe is should be... abstinence makes the hard-on grow harder?

My best ideas are conceived in the morning, not yet awake but no longer asleep, while experiencing that perennial male morning 'problem'. Many scenarios are played out in this mode until I simply have to get up. My best writing occurs later, usually at night but sometimes in the afternoon, with as much of those memories in my mind as I can retain. My best writing results from transcribing those seemingly vivid but brief 'live' actions into scenes tweaked with further imaginations through the day. For me, it doesn't just help to be horny, it's essential. Sometimes, I find that if I start writing when I'm not, I may get into the mood, and then I can write a decent story. I'm guilty of rushing the essential tease or the climactic sex when I 'somehow' cease to be horny. :)

I think in your interesting thread you've unearthed a near universal motivation for at least male authors. Is it the same for the ladies or those souls that wander between?

I don't understand why this is a problem. This is the motivation. If it makes you hard it will make someone else hard too. This is the whole point, isn't it? all you have to do is get through the sex scene THEN finish your business. When the sex scene and you are both finished then you can get to the blander parts of the story.

lather, rinse, repeat.

Maybe this is why "women write better erotica"-- we can wank and still want more?

For you, Timothy, there is a solution;
A male chastity device might give you the drive to finish the damn story. No taking off until you do! :p

I understand you completely. I have the same problem when writing erotica. As for how to fix it? No idea. I generally try to hold off as much as I can, or take a step back and cool down a bit before continuing, which isn't the best since you can lose your writing flow.

Sorry I can't be much of a help, but just wanted to let you know you're not alone in this.

Count me in the camp of those who can't, or maybe more accurately, won't, finish writing once I've shot my wad. I have to make myself hold off until after I've finished the story.

Of course, once I've finished (the story), I then have a thunderous release!

Just part of the occupational hazards, I'm afraid.......Carney

P.S. - congrats on spawning a very rare "writing-oriented" thread in the Author's Hangout!

Your premise is false, of course. It's rather silly to make such a sweeping generalization. The best erotica writers write the best erotica. Some are female and some are male.

And there are many rooms in the erotica house. In my observation, women stink, in general, in writing GM erotica for GM readers, for instance. But I wouldn't make it some sort of axiom--which would be arrogant--I just say that's my opinion from reading.

I definitely get aroused while writing down my fantasies. In fact, sometimes I'm more turned on by the act of creating then when they're merely images in my head. Seeing the images in words (if that makes sense), makes my masturbation sessions so intense! It's not a problem at all!

Gotta say, if I don't have to do something either during or after writing a sex scene, I don't feel like I've written a sex scene worthy of being published. And I probably average three sex scenes per story and write a story a day unless other obligations intervene, so there you go. I didn't really realize that others agonized over such things and had to ration or make monks of themselves to get a story written. Again, my condolences--but, in case it's catching, please remain on that side of the room. Thank you.

Catholic guilt maybe?

I'm kind of the same way. I get my best ideas when I first wake up in the morning before I get out of bed, while I'm in the shower, and in the bathroom.

I think the common denominator is that I am relaxed and my mind is idle and clear.
