"Fuck!" The towel in Lions' dressing room was thrown down against the metal wall of a locker hard, in belated frustration. The Leon High Lions lost their second of back-to-back games to Carrington High, and by a rather embarassing margin at that. Their assistant captain was seriously pissed off: "The fucking Robinson won it for them," he growled. "If it wasn't for him, we'd have beaten them bad - they sucked."
His teammate patted him on the back rather roughly.
"Let it go, man. The guy shoots 3-point baskets from midfield like nobody's business. Not much you can do about that, except leave a man back to block at the basket, and then your attack's shit. We'll win the next one."
"You don't get it, do you?" The assistant captain was furious. "You think I'm pissed just about this one game?! We're going to be facing Carrington in the finals, and if this guy is playing like he was these last two games, we're fucked. First time in five years that Lions will not be number one! Sounds cool?!"
That struck a chord. The whole school had a massive measure of arrogance based on their performance in the sport that easily beat all others in popularity in this part of town. Basketball was number one, and with it so was Leon High. To lose this title would be a massive humiliation.
"Yeah... that'd suck..." the teammate drew. "I wish that guy was on our team."
The assistant captain lifted his eyes at his teammate and suddenly got a sparkle in them.
"That's it." He grinned. "You're a fucking genius, Rider."
"Wha... Wait, are you for real? How're you gonna get him to switch schools? I know it's close by, but why would he want to?"
The assistant captain laughed: "I guess you're not THAT big a genius, man. Why did you join the team? For sport? 'Cause you just like basketball? Or something else?" He sent his buddy a mischievous grin and got one in return, as the two testosterone-filled athletes understood each other without words.
"Cheerleaders. Carrington's a conservative school, man. Their cheerleaders suck. Or, I mean, they actually DON'T suck." He grinned again. "So we just gotta show him what he's been missing. I'll talk to the girls about it. I bet you one of them would love to be Robinson's girlfriend, if not all; the guy's a fucking legend by now."

Later that night and less than a mile away the Carrington High celebrated their victory. Jack Robinson, the tall, broad-shouldered, and good-looking guy with short sandy brown hair and green eyes was, of course, the center of attention. He accepted congratulations, always deferring them to his teammates as well. Everyone was delighted that as of today the team had the most points in the region. But the celebration was anything but wild. There were chaperones in the banquet hall even though everyone present was eighteen or over. Jack was not short of female attention, but he wasn't interested in any of it after dating three girls from his school so far this year and failing to move beyond light kissing with any no matter how much he pushed. It just was too early, he figured, and resolved to wait until college. College girls, he hoped would be more adventurous than high school seniors. He had no idea just how wild a high school cheerleadr could be. Yet.
Jack got out of the party early and drove home. To his dismay, the vehicle broke down halfway, courtesy of two mechanically-inclined Leon boys, who visited it while he was inside. Now he was stuck on the side of the road, and without a cellphone to boot.
"Damn!" He swore.
