I know. But you know, I actually like the whole experience here, everybody. So despite some jaw dropping comments I don't want to put anybody on ignore. I usually have good self-restraint and ignoring skills, though.

I know JBJ enjoys being provocative so I usually don't worry about it. But sometimes, I'd like him to back up his claims. Also, he sometimes has some reality based things to say, but he revels in saying things in such a repugnant, extreme, provocative, and antagonistic way that it's almost impossible to see past it.

The one valuable thing I got from grad school is: The medical/scientific community are idgits.

Scratch the surface of their research and its like breaking the crust covering outhouse shit. I discovered that you can literally publish whatever bilge you want and no one checks your numbers or your facts. I examined a seminal study about identical twins and their correlation for alcoholism. If alcoholism is genetic twins should share the trait....like eye color or hair color. The famous researcher said twins had a significant correlation. I checked his math; the asshat added the numbers wrong! The results werent significant. But everyone on the planet uses his study to validate their own work.

One more thing. Boards ALWAYS evolve toward homogeniety because people like their opinions validated. They first eject the most radical dissenters then pare the board to a few like-minded Kool Aid Drinkers. Then the board collapses from boredom.

Researchers may cite a study, and you may have dug into a seminal study, but big time research is ego involved and if others don't get the same results they'll call bullshit. My money is on you getting the math wrong.

I don't care what you believe. My point is that you get in your own way by the way you choose to say things. People would actually listen, exchange ideas and debate with you if you didn't insist on being so offensive. Like they do with others here with opposing opinions. But you don't really want that.

By its very existence it attracts deviants. And the deviants here seek common-cause. Thats the whole thing in a nutshell.

Take a poll. I'll bet most Americans loathe alcoholics and have no sympathy for them period. Alcoholics rain destruction and misery everywhere they go. It's reality thats offensive to you and them.

By its very existence it attracts deviants. And the deviants here seek common-cause. Thats the whole thing in a nutshell.

Take a poll. I'll bet most Americans loathe alcoholics and have no sympathy for them period. Alcoholics rain destruction and misery everywhere they go. It's reality thats offensive to you and them.

Perhaps in RL you don't come across as you do here. And you interact mostly with people who share your beliefs. An observation (not a criticism) - you remind me of police friends of mine who see humans at their worst day after day after day and end up with cynical and negative outlook.

It is a porn board and there certainly are deviants here. There are also horny soccer moms and curious college students. All in all people here are likely to be more liberal, at least more accepting of differences. But there are all kinds of folks here, from liberal to conservative, Democrats and Republicans (US participants). So a lot of people here will disagree with you, but I truly think that you get the hostile responses primarily because of the way you say things, not what you say.

There's also a wide range of addiction though you''re focusing on the worst cases, which are devastating to lives, no doubt about that. I don't know about loathing and lack of sympathy, but I'm sure plenty of people do still see addiction as a moral weakness rather than a disease, which I think is unfortunate.

No one has demonstrated to me that they have no control over their hands and lips and arms, so I assume alcohol consumption is a voluntary action. People blame their conduct on the Devil, on disease, on everything but themselves.

It would be refreshing and novel if one drunk had the honesty to say"I'm out of control and dont know how to manage me." But most do know how to manage themselves. Dont swallow alcohol. Dont go to bars, dont go to liquor stores. Its not rocket science.

And when they drink anyway, you have to assume they do it because they want to.

alchoholism/addiction is more like a mental illness that needs to be treated

Former dope addict here. I've been on the wagon for almost 2 years. There are days when I'd give anything for just a taste of my drug to help me get through the torrents of shit that life throws. On most days, however, I feel glad I don't rely on that drug anymore to 'save' me.

I mean, I do keep showing up.

Well, most people recognize they have problems, and take corrective action to change. Not so with alcoholics and drug addicts. They make their problem into a cult with rituals and secret handshakes and a liturgy of bullshit, but keep drinking or using.

This I disagree with. I know a lot of people who drink occasionally, a lot of people who drink consistantly, and a lot of people who rarely drink or don't drink at all. I don't see any particualr trend among people in general of breaking down their issues and correcting their behavior. At least the people in AA understand what their problem is and are going to the meetings in an attempt to make corrections.
